Growth in Rail-Based Logistics

Over the past decade, Maruti Suzuki has expanded its use of railways for vehicle transportation. In the financial year 2014-15, only 5% of its vehicles moved by rail. By FY2025-26, this figure rose to 26.5%. The company achieved its fastest million milestone by moving from 20 lakh to 30 lakh cumulative rail dispatches in just 21 months.

Maruti Suzuki has invested in dedicated green logistics infrastructure. This includes in-plant railway sidings at its Hansalpur facility in Gujarat and Manesar facility in Haryana. Both plants have a combined dispatch capacity of about 7.5 lakh vehicles per year. The company is the first and only passenger vehicle manufacturer in India to operate railway sidings inside two manufacturing plants.

Network and Future Plans

Maruti Suzuki's rail logistics network covers more than 600 cities through 22 logistics hubs. The company uses a hub-and-spoke model for efficient transportation. Models dispatched by rail include Alto, WagonR, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Brezza, Fronx, Ertiga, XL6, Grand Vitara, Eeco, Super Carry, and Celerio. Export ports like Mundra and Pipavav are also connected via railway logistics.

Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki plans to establish an in-plant railway siding at its upcoming Kharkhoda manufacturing facility. The company expects that expanding rail logistics will reduce fuel consumption and ease road congestion.

Key Milestones and Recognition

Maruti Suzuki became India's first automobile manufacturer to receive an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license in May 2013. The company launched its first flexi-deck automobile wagon rake in March 2014. Other major milestones include crossing 10 lakh cumulative rail dispatches in November 2021 and 20 lakh in June 2024.

In March 2024, Maruti Suzuki inaugurated India's first automobile in-plant railway siding at Hansalpur. The Manesar facility followed with the country's largest in-plant railway siding in June 2025. The first batch of vehicles was transported by rail to Kashmir Valley in October 2025. In February 2026, the Hansalpur siding was registered as the world's first Modal Shift Transportation Project by Verra.

Maruti Suzuki credits government initiatives like the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan for supporting integrated multimodal logistics infrastructure. The company remains committed to sustainable freight movement across India.
