Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has once again made headlines by surpassing 35 lakh production units in FY2024-25. With such sales figures, Wagon R became one of the few models under the Maruti Suzuki portfolio in India. The car was first launched in the Indian market in December 1999 and has been on sale for the Indian customers for 25 years. This tall-boy hatchback, now joining elite company with Alto and Swift, underscores its unbreakable bond with Indian families over 25 years.
Maruti Suzuki, as a brand, stated that this milestone reflects enduring customer trust, as WagonR evolved with cutting-edge tech while preserving the spacious design and efficiency that first captivated buyers. If we talk about overseas, the WagonR was able to achieve 1 crore in sales in August 2025, sold in over 75 countries.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: 25 Years into the Making

Talking about its history, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R was introduced in India on December 17, 1999. While looking at the car, the Wagon R offers the tall-boy format, demonstrating unmatched headroom and cabin space in the compact segment market. With reference to its Kei car structure, Wagon R became one of the best-selling cars over three generations.
The latest 2025 iteration of Wagon R is based on Maruti Suzuki’s fifth-generation HEARTECH platform and is equipped with 6 airbags as standard. WagonR also offers safety suites such as an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and an electronic stability program.
Keys to Unmatched Success
For Indian customers, Wagon R offers multiple powertrain units. The base variant comes with a 1.0L engine and also offers a 1.2L K-series petrol engine, moving to the top-trim level. This petrol engine is paired with a manual, automatic, or factory-fitted CNG kit, delivering up to 34 kmpl mileage.
Talking about its safety features, the vehicle offers ABS, EBD, and hill-hold assist, starting at Rs 4.99 lakh ex-showroom. Its subtle running costs and massive boot make it ideal for India's diverse needs, from city runs to highway rides.
From The Director’s Desk

Speaking about the achievement, Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki, India, said, “This achievement is not just a production milestone but also reflects the enduring love and confidence that generations of customers have shown towards the brand. It is rare for a vehicle to receive such acceptance even after 25 years of its launch.”
He also added, “The Wagon R kept evolving with the introduction of new technology and features over time, while retaining its original 1990s design language. The Wagon R has been highly appreciated for aspects like its iconic tall-boy stance, spacious cabin, and better fuel efficiency.”

Its journey from 1999 streets to 35 lakh homes inspires, proving timeless design trumps fleeting trends.
