Mercedes AMG offers updates to GLS 63 and GLE 63 S with new M177 EVO V8 engine
Mercedes-AMG introduces the updated M177 EVO V8 engine in the GLS 63 and GLE 63 S, delivering improved performance, refined efficiency, and enhanced driving dynamics across both luxury SUVs.

Mercedes-BenzAMG has introduced updated versions of the GLS 63 and GLE 63 S SUVs, featuring the new M177 EVO twin-turbo V8 engine. This engine uses a motorsport-inspired flat-plane crankshaft, which reduces rotating mass and improves engine response. The new engine retains the previous power output but is more fuel efficient, according to AMG.
Key Highlights
- AMG introduces updated GLS 63 and GLE 63 S with new M177 EVO V8 engine
- Total output reaches 635 HP with 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator
- GLE 63 S accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 3.9 seconds
- GLS 63 achieves 0 to 100 kph in 4.2 seconds with all-wheel drive
Engine and Performance Details

The 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine produces 612 HP independently. A 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator adds 23 HP, bringing the total output to 635 HP. The starter-generator also increases torque at low engine speeds, enables energy recuperation during deceleration, and supports smooth engine restarts.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 3.9 seconds. The GLS 63 achieves the same in 4.2 seconds. Both models come with all-wheel drive as standard and have a top speed of 280 kph.
Technical Upgrades and Features

The new V8 engine features a revised firing order, updated fuel injection system, new intake and exhaust ports, a reworked camshaft, and a redesigned turbocharger housing. AMG has also updated the exhaust system, which now adjusts its flaps automatically to modify the engine note.
The active ride control system has been revised to reduce body roll. Both the front and rear driveshafts have been strengthened to manage the increased torque. The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 also receives a rear axle locking system for improved handling.
To comply with the latest emission standards, AMG has made a particulate filter standard on these models. This update marks AMG's shift from plug-in hybrids to new mild-hybrid V8 engines.
Broader AMG Strategy
AMG has confirmed that the upcoming C 63 will return to a V8 engine from its current plug-in hybrid setup. The non-AMG S 580 variant of the facelifted S-Class already uses the same M177 EVO engine. These changes reflect AMG's ongoing strategy to focus on mild-hybrid V8 technology across its performance lineup.

With the introduction of the updated M177 EVO V8 engine, Mercedes-AMG reinforces its commitment to blending raw performance with everyday usability. The GLS 63 and GLE 63 S now offer sharper power delivery, improved efficiency, and a more refined driving experience, making them stronger contenders in the high-performance luxury SUV segment while staying true to AMG’s signature character.
