Next-Generation Kia Sonet Spied Testing Ahead of 2027 India Launch
The next-generation Kia Sonet, expected in India by 2027, will feature Seltos-inspired design, a new K1 platform, updated interiors, and is likely to retain current engine options. A strong-hybrid variant may follow by 2029.

The second-generation Kia Sonet has been spotted testing for the first time, ahead of its expected India launch in 2027. The heavily camouflaged test vehicle reveals several new design elements and platform changes. The next-generation Sonet will adopt styling cues from the larger Kia Seltos, which received its second-generation update in 2026.
Key Highlights
- Next-generation Kia Sonet expected in India by 2027
- New model adopts Seltos-inspired design and K1 platform
- Current petrol and diesel engines likely to continue
- Strong-hybrid variant may arrive in 2028 or 2029
- Kia targets 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating for Sonet
Design and Platform Updates
The new Sonet features a grille design similar to the Seltos, stretching from one headlight to the other. The headlights appear inspired by the second-generation Hyundai Venue. The test mule’s alloy wheels match recent Kia models, and two eyebrow-shaped LED DRLs sit above the headlights. The bumper design is cleaner than the current Sonet, while the bonnet displays aggressive creases. A sunroof is visible, though it is unclear if Kia will offer a panoramic sunroof or retain the single-pane unit.
The next-generation Sonet will shift from the current K2 platform to the K1 platform, which also underpins the Syros and Venue. This change aims to address the Sonet’s rear space limitations, an issue resolved in the Venue’s 2025 update. Kia is targeting a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating for the Sonet, following the Venue and Syros, which have already achieved this rating.
Interior and Features

The dashboard is expected to receive a complete redesign, featuring more premium materials and a minimalistic layout similar to the Syros and Seltos. Larger 12.3-inch infotainment and driver’s display screens are likely to be included. It remains uncertain if Kia will equip the new Sonet with a Level-2 ADAS suite, as this feature was removed from the Syros in the 2026 model year update.
Powertrain and Launch Timeline
The next-generation Sonet is expected to retain its current range of engines. These include an 83hp 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 120hp 1.2-litre turbo-petrol, and a 116hp 1.5-litre diesel engine. Manual and automatic transmission options are also expected to continue. Kia is developing a strong-hybrid engine for the Sonet, based on the 1.2-litre petrol unit. This hybrid variant may launch in 2028 or 2029, after the new Sonet’s debut in India. Technical details for the hybrid powertrain have not yet been disclosed.
