Nissan Motor Co. is exploring new partnership opportunities in India, signaling flexibility beyond its current alliance with Renault. CEO Ivan Espinosa stated that Nissan remains open to collaborations with other companies, including Honda, as it works to strengthen its presence in the Indian market.
Key Highlights
- Nissan plans to produce and sell over 200000 vehicles in India and for export
- CEO Ivan Espinosa says Nissan is open to partnerships beyond Renault including with Honda
- New models like Gravite and Tekton will expand Nissan’s India portfolio
- Potential collaborations may focus on product sharing or rebadging with hybrid and EV technologies
Current Strategy and Renault Alliance
Nissan continues to rely on its partnership with Renault for its immediate India plans. The company aims to produce and sell over 200,000 vehicles, with about 100,000 units for domestic sales and 100,000 for export. Production will utilize Renault’s plant in Oragadam. Nissan has recently expanded its product portfolio by introducing the Gravite alongside the Magnite. The company is also preparing to launch the B-SUV Tekton, built on Renault’s Duster platform, targeting both Indian and export markets. A three-row C-SUV based on the same architecture will follow, broadening Nissan’s SUV offerings and supporting volume growth.
Potential for New Collaborations
Espinosa emphasized that Nissan is not restricted to a single partnership model in India. While the Renault alliance remains central, Nissan is evaluating other options to enhance its capabilities, especially in areas where it lacks depth. The possibility of working with Honda has been mentioned, though discussions are at an exploratory stage. Honda Cars India is developing products on its PF2 platform, which supports internal combustion engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles. Any future collaboration between Nissan and Honda would likely focus on product sharing or rebadging rather than deep joint development. Honda could contribute hybrid and alternative fuel technologies, while Nissan could offer expertise in electric vehicles, such as the Leaf.
Product Expansion and Technology Roadmap
Nissan’s India portfolio has been limited, with the Magnite driving most of its sales. The upcoming launches aim to fill this gap, though the transition from a single-model lineup will require careful execution. Nissan’s technology strategy remains adaptable, considering hybrids, electric vehicles, and internal combustion engines. Pricing pressures in India will influence the final product mix. The company’s openness to new partnerships reflects its broader global strategy, as highlighted by Espinosa at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. Previous discussions between Nissan and Honda on a global alliance did not result in a formal partnership, indicating ongoing alignment challenges.
Outlook for Indian Market
Currently, there is no formal roadmap or active discussion regarding a new partnership in India. Nissan’s immediate focus is on expanding its product range and leveraging its existing alliance with Renault. However, the company is signaling a willingness to consider additional collaborations as it rebuilds its India business. This approach could help Nissan address gaps in its portfolio and adapt to evolving market demands.
