Nissan has secured at least 250,000 units of annual production capacity at Renault's Chennai plant. This move supports Nissan's plan to expand its India line-up to four models. Guillaume Cartier, Nissan's Chief Performance Officer, confirmed the arrangement. The Chennai facility, now fully owned by Renault, can produce up to 500,000 vehicles each year. Nissan sold its 51 percent stake in the plant as part of a restructuring of the Franco-Japanese alliance.

Key Highlights

  • Nissan secures 250,000 units annual capacity at Renault's Chennai plant after selling its stake
  • Agreement extends beyond 2029 with option to renew and fixes transaction price for produced vehicles
  • Nissan expands India line-up from one to four models including Magnite, Gravite, and Tecton
  • Renault aims to increase plant utilization to 400,000 units annually with Nissan's continued production
  • Nissan retains finance arm and technical center interests in India despite plant ownership change

Plant Agreement Details

The agreement allows Nissan to reserve production capacity at the plant until at least 2029, with an option to renew. The deal sets a fixed transaction price for vehicles produced, which Nissan expects will help maintain profitability. Renault now manages daily operations at the site. Cartier described the new relationship as shifting from partnership to a customer-supplier model. He emphasized that this change would not reduce Nissan's presence in India.

Renault benefits from higher plant utilization, aiming for 400,000 units annually. Without Nissan, the plant would operate at less than 200,000 units. Nissan retains access to half the plant's capacity without holding equity. The arrangement suits both companies for now, but Nissan's future in India depends on how well the reserved-capacity clause and transaction price work in practice.

Nissan's India Strategy

The sale of the plant stake has faced some criticism, including from Nissan employees in India. Cartier addressed concerns by highlighting Nissan's ongoing commitment. The company still operates a wholly owned finance arm in Delhi and holds a 49 percent stake in its Chennai technical center. Cartier stated that Nissan remains dedicated to the Indian market, citing India's growth potential.

Nissan is expanding from a single-model presence, centered on the Magnite sub-compact SUV, to four models within a year. The Gravite has launched, the Tecton midsize SUV is set for June, and another model is in development. This expansion will increase Nissan's coverage from under 20 percent to nearly 70 percent of market segments. The company is investing several hundred million dollars to support this growth. A dedicated R&D center in Chennai will enable faster product updates in a rapidly changing market.

Market Outlook

India's car market, with 4.7 million units, remains a modest contributor to Nissan's global earnings. Cartier noted that India's infrastructure lags behind China, but its large population and low car ownership rates offer long-term opportunities. Over half of new car buyers in India are moving up from two-wheelers. Nissan's future growth in India will depend on the terms negotiated with Renault and how well the new arrangement supports its expansion plans.
