Renault Bridger to Feature New 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol Engine and CNG Option by 2027
Renault will launch the Bridger compact SUV in India by 2027 with a new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, factory-fitted CNG option, and possible hybrid and electric variants, aiming to compete in the growing compact SUV segment.

Renault is developing a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine for its upcoming compact SUV, the Renault Bridger. The company plans to launch the Bridger by the end of 2027 as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in India. This new model will join Renault’s refreshed lineup, positioned alongside the Renault Duster.
Key Highlights
- Renault Bridger to launch in India by end of 2027
- New 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine derived from Duster’s 1.3-litre unit
- Engine will use MPFi for easier CNG adaptation and lower complexity
- Factory-fitted CNG and potential hybrid and electric variants planned
Engine Development and Features
The new engine is a four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit derived from the Duster’s 1.3-litre turbocharged motor. Renault engineers have reduced the stroke to bring the displacement below 1.2 litres. This adjustment allows the Bridger to qualify for India’s sub-4 metre tax benefits, which could help Renault price the SUV more competitively in the market.
Unlike the Duster’s engine, the Bridger’s unit will use a multi-point fuel injection (MPFi) system instead of direct injection. MPFi is less complex and more cost-effective, making the engine easier to adapt for alternative fuels such as CNG. The platform for the Bridger has been designed to accommodate CNG powertrains from the beginning, and a factory-fitted CNG variant is expected to be available at launch.
Powertrain Options and Market Position
The turbocharged petrol engine is likely to deliver around 120 HP, which aligns with other compact SUVs in the segment. Renault also plans to offer a naturally aspirated version of the same engine, providing a more affordable entry-level option for buyers.
Renault’s strategy for the Bridger includes a broad range of powertrains. In addition to petrol and CNG variants, the company is considering hybrid and fully electric versions. This approach reflects Renault’s intent to appeal to a wide range of customers. There are no plans for a diesel engine. Instead, the hybrid variant may serve as an efficient alternative for buyers who previously preferred diesel models.
The diversified powertrain strategy positions the Bridger to compete with established rivals such as the Tata Nexon. The Nexon currently offers petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric options. With CNG accounting for a growing share of passenger vehicle sales in India, Renault expects the factory-fitted CNG variant to play a significant role in driving sales for the Bridger.
