Renault Group has confirmed it will not return to diesel engines in India, despite diesel's ongoing presence in the SUV-heavy passenger vehicle market. CEO François Provost stated that Renault's future portfolio will focus on new architectures, multiple body styles, and a wide powertrain mix, but will exclude diesel. This decision aligns with Renault's global direction of not investing in new-generation diesel engines.
Key Highlights
- Renault will not return to diesel engines in India
- Seven new models planned by 2030 with two new local architectures
- Hybrids and electrification will be central to Renault's India strategy
- Diesel share in Indian passenger vehicle market stands at 18.5 percent
- Renault targets 5 percent market share in India by 2030
Renault’s Shift Away from Diesel
Renault's move marks a significant change for a brand that once relied heavily on diesel, especially the 1.5-litre K9K engine. The K9K powered the popular Duster and several alliance models, helping Renault establish itself in India's SUV segment. The first-generation Duster sold nearly 200,000 units in India, with about 90 percent being diesel variants. However, Duster sales declined after the K9K was phased out in 2020 due to BSVI emission norms, with under 3,000 units sold in its final production year.
Diesel's share in the Indian passenger vehicle market has dropped, accounting for 18.5 percent at the end of FY-26. Yet, in the mid-size SUV segment, diesel still holds around 40 percent share. According to Jato Dynamics, diesel vehicle sales grew by 10 percent in the last financial year. Despite this, Renault is choosing to focus on other technologies, prioritizing long-term value and scalability.
Future Strategy and Powertrain Options

Renault plans to launch seven new models in India by 2030, supported by two new, highly localized architectures. These platforms will accommodate various body styles, from entry-level cars to C-segment SUVs. The company will adopt a wide range of powertrains, including petrol, CNG, full hybrid, and battery electric options. Renault is also prepared to introduce flex fuel alternatives when available.
Hybrids are expected to play a central role in Renault's India strategy. Provost emphasized the company's commitment to localizing its full hybrid technology, which he described as world-leading. Renault will source engines from Horse Powertrain, a joint venture with Geely and Saudi Aramco, specializing in next-generation hybrid and high-efficiency internal combustion engines.
India’s Role in Renault’s Global Plans
India is central to Renault Group's global growth ambitions. The company expects India to become its third-largest market by 2030, targeting a 5 percent market share. Renault also aims to increase exports from India by leveraging its engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
Renault's strategy in India is clear: the company will focus on turbo-petrols, hybrids, and electrification, aligning its portfolio with future technologies and moving away from legacy diesel engines.
