Renesas acquires Irida Labs to strengthen edge vision AI portfolio
Renesas expands its edge AI footprint by acquiring Irida Labs, aiming to deliver advanced real-time vision solutions across industries.

Renesas Electronics Corporation has finalized the acquisition of Irida Labs, a Greece-based AI software company. This move strengthens Renesas’ embedded processing and edge AI software for machine vision and intelligent camera applications. The integration will expand Renesas’ offerings in edge-based AI systems, focusing on industrial automation, robotics, smart cities, healthcare, agriculture, and IoT deployments.
Key Highlights
- Renesas acquires Greece-based Irida Labs to strengthen edge Vision AI capabilities
- Irida Labs’ software will integrate with Renesas' 365 cloud-based development platform
- Acquisition targets industrial automation, robotics, smart cities, healthcare and IoT applications
- Combined technology aims to lower power use and simplify development for Vision AI systems
Acquisition Details and Strategic Goals
Renesas plans to integrate Irida Labs’ embedded Vision AI software into its Renesas 365 development platform. Renesas 365 is a cloud-based electronics system development platform launched recently. The company aims to address the growing demand for AI-enabled systems that process visual data locally on devices, rather than relying on cloud computing.
Developers face ongoing challenges in edge AI environments. These include power-efficient processing, AI model deployment, latency, and data security. By acquiring Irida Labs, Renesas seeks to offer solutions that address these challenges directly.
Technology Integration and Product Impact
Irida Labs develops embedded software for AI-powered visual perception systems, including its PerCV.ai platform. Renesas will combine this software stack with its RA microcontrollers and RZ microprocessors. This integration aims to deliver more comprehensive vision AI systems with lower power consumption and reduced development complexity.
Gaurang Shah, Vice President and General Manager of Renesas’ Embedded Processing Product Group, stated that Irida Labs’ Vision AI tools, software, and AI engineers will now be part of Renesas. He emphasized that the combined solution will bring together AI perception, embedded processing, development tools, and system integration. This should help reduce the learning curve for developers working on edge AI projects.
Vassilis Tsagaris, CEO and co-founder of Irida Labs, said the acquisition will merge Irida Labs’ expertise in edge vision AI with Renesas’ hardware portfolio and ecosystem. This combination is expected to support broader deployment of edge AI systems worldwide.
Future Outlook for Renesas 365 Platform
Renesas stated that bringing Irida Labs’ technology in-house will enable faster delivery of integrated solutions. The company also plans to expand the capabilities of the Renesas 365 platform over time. This acquisition positions Renesas to meet the increasing demand for efficient, secure, and locally processed AI systems across multiple industries.
