Royal Enfield has good news for the enthusiasts as the company has decided to update and bring new launches in the upcoming months The company has announced an array of addition and updation across its 350 cc, 450 cc and 650 cc lineup, in a move to solidify the brands position in the two-wheeler market in India.

Facelifted Classic 350

Anticipation has built among enthusiasts as RE has emphasised on the unveiling of facelift for the existing Classic 350. This will mark a significant milestone as the company has presented Classic 350 since its transition to the technologically superior J-Series engine, bidding adieu to the older UCE motor.

Moreover, Classic 350 has marked an impressive sales figure in the ongoing month, which has already given a proof of its popularity, now with the unveiling of its facelift the motorcycle will spark a new wave among followers. The expected features are LED lighting, alloy wheels, and the convenience of tubeless tires. Spotted alongside test mules of the Classic 650, these updates promise a more advanced and elevated riding experience for riders across India.

Expanding the Classic Legacy

To expand and enhance its middle-weight classic motorcycle segment, RE has decided to expand its 650 cc motorcycle portfolio with Classic 650. Classic 650 is positioned strategically above Interceptor 650 and below Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650.

With test mules spotted recently, the Classic 650 showcased a familiar silhouette, which will be enhanced to accommodate the larger platform and aesthetics. Boasting an identical powertrain, same as other Royal Enfield 650cc engines, the 648cc parallel-twin oil-cooled engine is set to deliver an outstanding performance of almost 45 bhp and 52 Nm, complemented by a seamless 6-speed gearbox and featuring a slipper clutch.

Passenger Vehicles Sales June 2024 shows 3 percent: SIAM

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has released its sales report for June 2024, along with Q1 FY2025. According to the SIAM report, the passenger vehicle segment recorded an uptick of 3.0% selling 3,37,757 units as compared to 3,27,788 units sold in the same month in the previous year. Commenting on sales data of Q1 for 2024-25, Vinod Aggarwal, President, SIAM said, “All segments viz., Passenger Vehicle, Commercial Vehicle, Three-Wheeler and Two-Wheelers posted growth in Q1 of 2024-25 over the Q1 of last year. While Passenger Vehicles and Commercial Vehicles have witnessed moderate growth, the Two Wheelers and Three Wheelers have posted very handsome growth in double digits. Within Two-Wheelers, Scooters have posted even higher growth based on some green shoots of recovery in entry-level two-wheelers. With positive outlook on monsoon and coming festive season, the Automotive Sector is poised to perform better in the balance part of the year.”

The passenger cars segment witnessed a decline of - 13.7% with sales of 1,00,406 units in June 2024 compared to the 1,16,375 units sold in the same month the previous year. But the Utility vehicles showed a positive growth of 18.2% with the sales of 1,83,056 units in June 2024 compared to the 1,54,821 units sold in the same month of the previous year. The Vans segment also showed a growth of 15.1% with sales of 10,771 units in June 2024 compared to the 9,357 units sold in the same month the previous year.

The Two-wheelers segment witnessed a growth of 21.3% with sales of 16,14,154 units in June 2024 compared to the 13,30,826 units sold in the same month the previous year. The scooters segment also showed a growth of 40.1 % with sales of 5,42,851 units compared to the 3,87,373 units sold in the same month the previous year. The Motorcycle segment also showed a growth of 13.4% with the sales of 10,30,906 units in June 2024 compared to the 9,08,954 units sold in the same month the previous year. The mopeds segment also showed a growth of 17.1% with sales of 40,397 units in June 2024 compared to the 34,499 units sold in the same month previous year.

The Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono is one of the least powerful bikes that Ducati has ever made. However, it has a higher price tag than the Hypermotard 950 in India. Priced at Rs 16.50 lakh (ex-showroom), it seems like an expensive choice. So, why is this Ducati so costly?

Import Tax and Custom Duties

Almost 90% of Ducati's bikes come from Thailand as completely built-up (CBU) units. Ducati has a big manufacturing unit there, and India has a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Thailand. This means Ducati bikes from Thailand usually do not attract custom duties. However, the Hypermotard 698 Mono is taxed heavily in India for a simple reason—it has an engine displacement of less than 800cc. The FTA tax benefits apply only to bikes above 800cc. Bikes below 800cc, like the Hypermotard 698 Mono, are taxed at 50% of their declared value.

Dealer and Operational Costs

Another reason for the high price is the profit margins for Ducati India and its dealers. Premium bikes often have high margins, even for dealers. Running a premium bike showroom comes with high overhead costs. Ducati showrooms are typically located in prime areas of metro cities and employ well-trained staff. To cover these costs and ensure profitability, Ducati offers good margins to its dealers.

Due to these factors, the Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono has a high price in India. While it may not be a popular choice, Ducati keeps it in their portfolio to offer a complete range of their global bikes in the country.

BMW owner to get $1.9M for thumb injury from soft close door malfunction

The court has ordered BMW to pay $1.9 million (Rs 15.86 crores) in compensation to software engineer Godwin Boateng after he lost his thumb due to a malfunctioning soft-close door on his BMW X5. The incident occurred in July 2016 when Boateng's right hand was resting on the edge of the driver-side door. The door closed quickly despite the obstruction, severing the tip of his thumb. Despite immediate medical attention, the thumb could not be reattached.

  • The soft-close doors on BMWs are designed to close slowly to prevent injuries. However, unlike soft-close windows that use sensors to stop upon detecting an obstruction, the door continued to close.
  • Boateng argued that the injury severely impacted his work as a software engineer, potentially causing him losses of up to $250,000 (Rs 2.08 crores) annually.
  • After an eight-year legal battle, the jury found BMW liable for damages, despite no specific defect being identified in the door mechanism.

BMW’s defense emphasized that the owner’s manual explicitly warns against placing any body part between the door and frame. Nonetheless, the jury ruled in favor of Boateng. It remains uncertain whether BMW will appeal the CarBike360 Says. 

Boateng's lawyer pointed out that this is not an isolated incident, with at least 44 similar injuries reported worldwide due to BMW’s soft-close doors. A comparable case involved Mercedes-Benz, which faced a lawsuit in 2022 after a user lost part of their thumb in a GLE SUV's soft-close door.

Ford has brought back the iconic Capri, now as an electric vehicle (EV). The new Ford Capri EV boasts an impressive range of 627 kilometers and a design that draws similarities to the Citroen Basalt.

From Coupe to SUV

In the past, the Ford Capri was known as a stylish two-door coupe. Today, it has been transformed into a modern SUV, a popular choice in the auto industry. Built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, the Capri EV combines elements of a coupe, crossover, and sedan.

Similar Design to Citroen Basalt

The Ford Capri EV features a three-box crossover sedan design with a high stance, flat roof, and sloping fastback-like roofline. This design is quite similar to the upcoming Citroen Basalt, especially in the Vivid Yellow color. However, the Capri EV is larger, measuring 4.63 meters in length, 1.87 meters in width, 1.62 meters in height, and with a 2.76-meter wheelbase.

Exterior and Interior Features

The Capri EV has a sleek front fascia with neatly designed headlights connected by a black plaque housing the Ford logo. The car’s shoulder line flows seamlessly from the bonnet to the C-pillars, merging with the roofline. The pillars are blacked out, adding to the car's stylish look. Ford offers 19-inch wheels as standard, with an option to upgrade to 21-inch wheels. The rear design mirrors the front with a flat look and similar LED tail lights. Gloss black body claddings enhance the car's aesthetics.

Inside, the Capri EV resembles the Ford Explorer EV, with a 14.6-inch portrait-style infotainment screen and a floating center console. The steering wheel features details reminiscent of past Capri models. Pricing for the Capri EV starts at EUR 51,950 (approximately Rs 47 lakh).

Powerful Performance

The Ford Capri EV comes in two variants. The base RWD variant features a 77 kWh battery pack, delivering a 627 km range (WLTP) and a 282 bhp motor, accelerating to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. The top AWD variant has a larger 79 kWh battery, offering a 592 km range (WLTP) and a 335 bhp motor, reaching 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift achieved a 3-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test evaluation. This rating is a step down from previous generations, where the 2nd gen Swift scored 5 stars and the 3rd gen scored 4 stars with a safety package. The new Swift, in its 4th generation, has incorporated six airbags and several electronic aids as standard features.

Euro NCAP’s recent tests on the new Swift revealed an overall 3-star rating. Tata Motors has unveiled new teasers for the upcoming Tata Curvv Coupe SUV, emphasizing the off-road capabilities of the Curvv in the Thar Desert and Himalayan range. The Tata Curvv will initially launch with electric and diesel powertrains, with a petrol variant expected just before the festive season. The teasers provide a glimpse of the Tata Curvv's impressive design and features, showcasing its potential to handle challenging terrains.

Revealed at the Bharat Mobility Show 2024, the teasers display the Curvv navigating tough terrains, offering glimpses of its design and features. Notably, the teasers highlight the Curvv's sloping roofline, flush door handles, and alloy wheels, while it tackles the harsh conditions of Jaisalmer and the Himalayas.

Key exterior features:

  •  Daytime running lamps (DRLs) and headlamps.
  •  Connected lamp setup at the rear.
  •  Speculated EV and diesel variants with distinct air intake designs.
  •  Flush-fitted door handles and aero wheels, similar to the Nexon EV.

The Curvv, a compact SUV, boasts a spacious boot of 422 litres, larger than the Nexon's. Other exterior features include split LED headlamp units, split tail lamps, shark fin antenna, and roof rails, though the vehicle remains fully camouflaged.

Interior features expected in the Curvv:

  • 12.3-inch touchscreen system with telematics, video streaming, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • JBL surround sound system.
  • Ventilated seats, wireless charging, and touch controls for air conditioning.

The Curvv EV promises a range of 400-450 km, supported by Tata's Acti.ev platform, which also underpins the Punch EV. This platform offers DC fast charging, V2L (vehicle-to-load), drive modes, and adjustable energy regeneration. The Curvv EV is expected to come in Standard Range and Long Range configurations, potentially with a 50 kWh battery pack offering around 500 km per charge.

Expected to start at ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom), the Curvv EV will compete with models like the MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3, and upcoming Creta EV. The ICE version will rival the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, and others in the compact SUV segment.
