Tata Outpaces Mahindra & Hyundai in Retail Sales in March 2025
Tata witnessed a 5% YoY increase in its sales volume, while the automaker saw a market share of 13.8%, registering a modest decline of 0.3%.
In the third place, Mahindra secured its position with sales of 46297 units and a market share of 13.20%, showcasing 17% YoY growth in sales and a 1.7% rise in market share. In contrast, Hyundai Motor India was in the fourth position with sales of 42511 units, showcasing a YoY decline of 5%. Additionally, Hyundai's market share in March 2025 dropped from 13.50% to 12.13%.
Hyundai's Second-Place Dominance Disrupted
For a long time, Hyundai was enjoying the second rank in India's retail sales of passenger vehicles. However, Mahindra outpaced Hyundai in February 2025 to acquire second place, and now, Tata Motors has overtaken Mahindra and Hyundai to become the second-highest-selling passenger vehicle brand in India.
While the exact factors are unclear, it's expected that the flagship offerings from Mahindra, including XUY700, Thar, Bolero, and ScorpioN, and Tata's flagship Curvv EV, Punch, and Harrier, helped these brands gain a better position in the market. Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai launched its Creta EV in January, but it still saw a slight decline in its sales performance.
Overall, the domestic car market saw cumulative retail sales of 350,603 units in March 2025, registering 6.27% YoY growth.
