On World Environment Day 2022, Kolkata Police Commissioner Binit Kumar Goel launched 17 electric vehicles at a ceremony held at the Police Athletic Club in Maidan. The EVs will be used by the Kolkata Police Department on several fronts. A number of e-cycles will be introduced for use by Kolkata Police for beat policing and regular patrols as part of the celebrations.
The fleet launch is part of a bigger transition to electric vehicles that was announced in 2021. The lease of 226 Tata Nexon EVs to KP was announced in September 2021. The old diesel cars that are still in the fleet will be phased out over time when the new automobiles are introduced. The vehicles will be leased for an eight-year period.
The EV fleet will be shared/distributed across several police departments, including the traffic department, based on utility. It was announced in September 2021 that Rs 8.82 crore would be provided for the 8-year lease plan to go into force. The Nexon units will be distributed based on the need for a reliable charging network and the need to charge on a regular basis. The government announced refunds and relaxations for individuals registering new electric automobiles and two-wheelers for a period of two years last week, in order to increase EV usage even more. CNG cars are treated with the same respect.
