The Tata Nexon was recently seen testing on Indian roads, hinting at a new powertrain option. The test vehicle had the same silhouette, lighting, and plastic components as the current model. No facelift is planned at this time, but the prototype suggests a possible CNG and AMT combination.
Key Highlights
- Tata Nexon test mule spotted with unchanged exterior design
- Current Nexon offers petrol, CNG, diesel, and electric powertrains
- Turbo-CNG setup helps reduce power loss and saves boot space
- Possible new CNG and AMT combination may join the lineup
Current Powertrain Options

The Tata Nexon currently offers four powertrains. These include a petrol engine with 118bhp and 178Nm torque, a CNG engine with 99bhp and 170Nm torque, a diesel engine with 113bhp and 260Nm torque, and two electric variants. The electric versions have 30kWh and 45kWh batteries, producing 127bhp/215Nm and 143bhp/215Nm respectively.
The Nexon’s CNG variant uses a turbocharged engine, unlike many rivals that use a naturally aspirated CNG setup. This turbo-CNG configuration helps reduce the noticeable loss of power often seen in CNG vehicles. The use of twin cylinders in the CNG variant also helps save boot space, making it more practical for users.
Potential CNG and AMT Combination
The test mule displayed a visible exhaust, indicating an internal combustion engine. The main update could be the addition of a CNG and AMT combination, which is currently missing from the Nexon lineup. This new pairing would expand the Nexon’s powertrain options and provide buyers with greater flexibility.
CNG powertrains have been well received in the Indian market, and the Nexon has benefited from this trend. Introducing a CNG and AMT combination would fill a gap in the Nexon’s offerings. It would also strengthen Tata’s position in the competitive compact SUV segment by providing a wider range of choices to customers.
Market Impact
The addition of a CNG and AMT variant would diversify the Nexon’s portfolio. It would appeal to buyers seeking fuel efficiency and convenience. This move could help Tata Motors attract more customers and maintain the Nexon’s strong market presence.
