The all-new Tata Safari EV is expected to launch by the festive season of 2026, marking Tata Motors’ entry into the premium three-row electric SUV segment. Built on the Gen 2 EV architecture.

Tata Motors will launch the electric version of the Safari SUV in India by the festive season of 2024. The Safari EV will become Tata’s new flagship electric vehicle, taking over from the Harrier EV. This model will also be Tata’s first three-row electric SUV.

Platform and Powertrain Details

The Tata Safari EV, codenamed ‘Tayrona,’ will use the same acti.ev+ platform as the Harrier EV. This is an internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric vehicle (EV) conversion, not a ground-up EV design. The Safari EV is expected to share the Harrier EV’s battery and motor options. These include 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs, both with a single rear motor (RWD) as standard. A dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup is also likely for the 75 kWh variant.
The Harrier EV offers an ARAI-claimed range of 627 km with the 75 kWh RWD, 622 km with the 75 kWh AWD, and 538 km with the 65 kWh RWD. The Safari EV, being larger and heavier, is expected to have slightly lower range figures. The vehicle is likely to support up to 100kW DC fast charging.
Features and Equipment
The Safari EV will likely carry over several features from the Tata Harrier EV. These include multiple terrain modes such as Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, and Custom. The SUV will also have a multi-link rear suspension with frequency-dependent dampers for better ride comfort.
Styling changes will be minor, with a closed-off grille, revised bumpers, EV-specific badges, and aero-optimized alloy wheels. The Safari EV’s dimensions will match its ICE counterpart, and the interior layout will remain largely unchanged.
The Safari EV will benefit from Tata’s TiDAL (Tata Intelligent Digital Architecture Layer) E&E architecture, first seen in the Harrier EV. This system enables features like over-the-air updates, a 540-degree surround view, improved Level 2 ADAS, auto park assist, low-speed cruise control, UPI-based in-car payments, and a summon mode for remote vehicle movement.
Production, Launch, and Market Position
Tata plans to start production of the Safari EV by August 2026, ahead of its festive season launch. Sharing components with the Harrier EV has allowed Tata to speed up development. This will be the second new powertrain for the Safari in 2026, following the earlier launch of the Safari petrol variant.
With the Safari EV, Tata will offer every current SUV model with both ICE and EV powertrains. The company expects the Safari EV to add 1,000 to 1,500 units to its monthly sales. The main competitor for the Safari EV will be the Mahindra XEV 9S. Pricing is expected between Rs 22.5 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. For comparison, the Harrier EV is priced from Rs 21.49 lakh to Rs 28.99 lakh, excluding charger and cosmetic package costs.
