This special milestone for the brand is likely to be graced by Honourable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Under the MoM agreement, both parties will benefit and will mark a special journey for both VinFast and the southern Indian state, starting a new chapter in electric mobility and growth in the Indian automotive landscape.

What’s the actual cost?

VinFast had already announced in 2024 that they are planning to introduce themselves in the Indian automotive market and have decided to set up a plant for manufacturing. This new plant is spread over a sprawling 400-acre site within the Tamil Nadu Industrial Promotion Corporation (SIPCOT) industrial estate.

The brand already represents an investment of nearly Rs 16,000 crore to build the manufacturing factory. However, the factory took just around 15 months from groundbreaking in early 2024 to completion and is designed with a cutting-edge, integrated EV manufacturing capability. The brand claims to produce up to 150,000 vehicles annually.

Creating new job opportunities

With such huge money invested in the development of the industry. It reflects Tamil Nadu’s ambitious industrial transformation strategy under the leadership of CM Stalin. The plant is also the centerpiece of a new green industrial cluster and an ecosystem fostering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the region. The plant is expected to generate 3000 to 3500 direct and indirect jobs. However, the brand had recently inducted the first group of 200 locally hired professionals at the Thoothkudi plant.

VinFast’s India plant will localize production primarily for its electric SUV models, the VF6 and VF7, targeted at Indian consumers. With plans to begin deliveries in August 2025. Beyond Indian sales, VinFast aims to use the facility as a strategic hub for exports to West Asia and Africa.

From the CEO’s vision

According to VinFast India CEO Pham Sanh Chau, “This strategic manufacturing hub underpins the company’s global ambitions and zero-emission transportation vision.” He later added, “The plant’s role in accelerating innovation, economic growth, and sustainable mobility, while reinforcing India-Vietnam ties in the evolving global automotive sector.”

VinFast’s entrance into the Indian automotive market indicates that the rise of electrification in India is moving towards an upward trajectory, including Tesla’s debut entry into the country.

Conclusion

The VinFast plant inauguration on July 31 is not just an event but a landmark movement signaling India’s rising prominence in the global EV landscape. The new plant will generate new job opportunities for the people of India. However, the most skilled workers might be hired locally from the state of Tamil Nadu. The plant signifies a technological advancement and an emerging economy for Tamil Nadu and India alike.
