Volkswagen Introduces First Strong-Hybrid Engine for Golf and T-Roc by Late 2026
Volkswagen will introduce its first strong-hybrid engine in the Golf and T-Roc from late 2026, featuring a 1.5-litre TSI engine, 1.6kWh battery, and two electric motors, with outputs of 138hp and 172hp.

Volkswagen has announced its first strong-hybrid engine, set to debut in the international-spec Golf hatchback and T-Roc SUV. The rollout will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, between October and December. This marks Volkswagen’s entry into the strong-hybrid segment, aligning with similar offerings from Honda, Maruti, and Toyota in India.
Key Highlights
- Volkswagen to launch first strong-hybrid engine in Golf and T-Roc from late 2026
- Hybrid system pairs 1.5-litre TSI engine with 1.6kWh battery and two electric motors
- Two power outputs available at 138hp and 172hp for different markets
- Electric-only drive possible up to 60kph with engine acting as generator
- Strong-hybrid Golf to sit between eTSI mild-hybrid and GTE plug-in hybrid variants
Strong-Hybrid Engine Details
The new strong-hybrid system will pair with Volkswagen’s 1.5-litre TSI engines, which power the front wheels. This engine is the updated Evo2 version of the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit, already available in the Taigun and Virtus models in India. The hybrid setup includes a 1.6kWh battery and two electric motors. One motor drives the vehicle, while the other acts as a generator.
The battery pack is positioned in the rear floor section of both the Golf and T-Roc. Volkswagen will offer the strong-hybrid system in two power outputs: approximately 138hp and 172hp. The system allows electric-only driving at speeds up to 60kph, with the engine functioning as a generator. At higher speeds, the electric motor provides additional power during acceleration.
Market Positioning and Availability
Volkswagen states that these new hybrid models do not require charging cables or charging infrastructure. This feature is expected to lower purchase costs compared to plug-in hybrids. In the Golf lineup, the strong-hybrid variant will be positioned between the more affordable eTSI mild-hybrid and the higher-priced GTE plug-in hybrid. For the T-Roc, the strong-hybrid will be the top variant in the range.
The 172hp version of the strong-hybrid system will be available in the US and other global export markets for the Golf. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed specific details for the Indian market. The company’s move into strong-hybrid technology reflects a broader industry trend toward electrification and reduced emissions.
