The Touareg has served buyers seeking a high-quality, spacious vehicle without a premium badge. Sander noted that this market segment sits between mainstream and premium brands. He explained that 80 percent of this segment consists of SUVs, making a large electric SUV the logical successor.

Volkswagen’s new model will likely carry the ‘ID’ prefix, aligning with its electric vehicle range. The vehicle may use technology from Audi and Porsche, Volkswagen Group’s premium brands. The launch could follow the introduction of the Volkswagen ID Golf, further expanding Volkswagen’s electric portfolio.

Market Position and Customer Focus

Sander emphasized that the Touareg’s target group values design, space, and sophistication but does not seek a premium badge. He said Volkswagen is exploring ways to serve these customers with a future product. Although the Touareg is not a high-volume product, it occupies an important position in Volkswagen’s lineup.

Volkswagen’s broader strategy focuses on producing vehicles that remain accessible to large groups of consumers. Sander reiterated the company’s commitment to affordability and quality, stating, “We are the brand for the people, and that’s what our name stands for.”

Future Outlook

The upcoming electric SUV is expected to fill the gap left by the Touareg. It will target buyers who want a high-end vehicle without the association of a premium brand. Volkswagen’s approach reflects its intent to balance innovation with broad market appeal as it transitions toward electric vehicles.

As the Touareg edges towards retirement, Volkswagen is clearly using the moment to pivot its flagship SUV story into the electric era. With plans for a larger, battery-powered successor under evaluation, longtime Touareg loyalists may not be saying goodbye forever but rather waiting for a reborn, all-electric icon that aligns with Volkswagen’s rapidly expanding global EV ambitions.
