Volkswagen, a pioneer in automotive technology, unveiled its groundbreaking integration of ChatGPT into its vehicles at the CES electronics trade fair. This innovative move aims to transform the way drivers interact with their cars, allowing for a seamless communication through voice commands.
Volkswagen presented its first vehicles featuring ChatGPT that’s set to be available for the customers in North America and Europe from early in the second quarter of this year. This integration marks a significant leap forward in the user experience, with the AI-powered system capable of recognizing and responding to a wide range of voice commands, from adjusting the temperature to providing the restaurant recommendations.
Volkswagen announced that its voice assistant, integrating ChatGPT into its cars, will engage in back-and-forth dialogues with the users by the mid of the year. This advancement sets Volkswagen apart as the first volume manufacturer to make this technology a standard feature in its compact segment cars.
Customers can now adjust various functionalities in their vehicles without touching a button, emphasizing the shift toward the intuitive and seamless usage. Kai Gruenitz, the Volkswagen brand's board member for technical development, highlighted the importance of speech dialogue systems, stating, "Our customers don't want to manually adjust their seats... they want to use speech dialogue systems."
While the critics are arguing that adding a generative AI in the vehicles lags behind the expectations, Volkswagen contends that this move represents a crucial step towards providing the users with a seamless and intuitive in-car experience. Gruenitz stated, "I think what our customers are really looking for is seamless, intuitive usage of their car."
Volkswagen's announcement follows General Motor’s revelation of working on a virtual personal assistant using AI models behind the ChatGPT. Mercedes-Benz also conducted a test program last June, enabling a large number of vehicles to download ChatGPT for the tasks like making reservations.
