Key Highlights:
Tata Motors is all set to launch a new premium and more sportier version of the Atroz hatchback. The new hatchback in discussion is the Altroz Racer. The upcoming hatchback will be different from the standard Altroz with its improved performance and power delivery. Now the major query arising in the minds of potential buyers is do they wait for the Atroz Racer or buy the already available Hyundai i20 N Line which is the greatest competitor of the Altroz Racer in the Indian auto market. So, if you are also facing the same dilemma, this article is for you. Here, we will compare both these hatchbacks in terms of performance, features and specs, so you can easily decide which one is more suitable for you.

Talking about the interiors, the Hyundai i20 N Line carries an all-black themed interior along with red accents and the signature N Line badging on the leatherette seats. The i20 N Line also has a metal finish on the pedals, red ambient lighting and steering wheels and gear lever which are exclusive to Hyundai’s N Line models.

On the feature front too, the Hyundai i20 N Line is loaded enough. The hatchback features a big 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display which supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and even OTA updates. Additionally, the hatchback gets other features such as a digital instrument cluster, reverse camera with sensor, cruise control, automatic climate control, wireless charging, electrically powered sunroof and Bose 7 speaker sound system.

Safety features of the i20 N Line include 6 airbags, TPMS, Electronic stability control, seat belt reminders for passengers with three-point seatbelts and hill assist control.

On the other side, essentially being a sportier version of the Altroz hatchback, the Atroz Racer also features a sportier-looking interior. The Altroz hatchback gets a blacked-out dashboard with red and white coloured accents all around the interiors and contrast stitching for the steering wheels and seats. The Altroz Racer gets the same white and red colour inserts that it carries on its exteriors as well.

The Atroz hatchback gets most of the modern features which include a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen display supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, a digital instrumental console, HuD, voice-controlled sunroof, connected car technology, a rear parking sensor and cruise control.

As far as safety is concerned, the Altroz Racer follows Tata’s standards with features such as 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), TPMS, ISOFIX mounts, and 3-point seatbelts with reminders for all. Being an improved version of the standard Altroz, which scored 5 stars on Global NCAP crash tests, the Altroz Racer will definitely be safer in all terms.
In terms of power, the Hyundai i20 N Line comes equipped with a powerful 1.0 litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine which is capable of generating 120 bhp of power and 172 Nm of torque. This powerhouse comes paired with a 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT. Some other performance-related features include a tough suspension setup, disc brakes on all wheels and most importantly it gets the twin-tip exhaust note which makes it a real sports hatchback.
On the other hand, confirmed by a recently leaked dealer presentation, the Atroz Racer will be powered by a 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine which makes 120 bhp of power and 170 Nm of torque. The 1.2-litre turbo petrol unit will be mated with a 6-speed manual and Dual Clutch Automatic gearbox (DCA) gearbox. Despite generating similar power figures, both the Hyundai i20 N Line and Altroz Racer will differ in performance, depending on the tuning.
Feature | Hyundai i20 N Line | Tata Altroz Racer |
Engine | 1.0L Turbo Petrol (120 bhp, 172 Nm) | 1.2L Petrol (120 bhp, 170 Nm) |
Transmission | 6-speed Manual, 7-speed DCT | Manual, DCA |
Unique Selling Points | DCT option, stiffer suspension, all-wheel disc brakes | Expected to be more affordable, potential for a more aggressive look |
Who should buy? | Drivers who prioritise a fun and engaging driving experience with a comfortable ride | Drivers looking for a sporty hatchback with a potentially lower price tag and a potentially more aggressive design |
The Hyundai i20 N Line is available in two variants- N6 and N8. The prices start from Rs. 9.99 lakh and go up to Rs. 12.5 lakh. On the other hand, the Tata Altroz Racer is expected to come with a starting price tag of Rs. 9 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
However, the i20 N Line offers a DCT which provides a comfortable and engaging driving experience, but with an extra cost. The Altroz Racer is expected to be a value-for-money contender with more aggressive looks, but details about the hatchback are still under wraps. However, the set of features and power figures are almost similar in both these hatchbacks. If you can wait for the Altroz Racer's launch, you'll have a clearer picture to choose the perfect car for you.
