Yamaha Motor India is making a sporty comeback in the Indian two-wheeler market. The Japanese brand has recently filed a trademark for the YZF-R2 fairing sport bike to launch in India. This move hints that a potential new 200 cc sport bike will be launched under the Yamaha nameplate in India. Even if it were a direct successor to the current model, the YZF-R15.
Recent reports confirm that the filing safeguards the nameplate for future use, amid growing demand for performance-oriented commuters. The R2-entitled motorcycle was traded in multiple international markets. It was first filed in 2021 in the global two-wheeler market. Let’s check out what possible details were revealed about the upcoming Yamaha R2 bike.

Yamaha recently filed a trademark application on November 5, 2024, under a peculiar application number. This was entitled “Accepted & Advertised” by late November 2025. Yamaha first protected the R2 moniker internationally in 2021 across markets like Australia and Europe, yet no launches followed until this Indian step.
Yamaha also revealed that it will discontinue the current model of the R3 and MT-03 from the 2026 season. The filing aligns with India's evolving GST 2.0 incentives for sub-350 cc bikes, making a 200 cc model available. No oppositions have surfaced, inching it toward final registration.
This protective measure echoes past strategies, prioritizing brand security over immediate reveals. Dealership intel reveals no fresh R3 or MT-03 stocks in metros like Delhi and Mumbai, signaling Yamaha's lineup refresh.

Yamaha trademarked the upcoming YZF-R2 sport bike for the Indian market. The brand has not disclosed any further specifications about the mechanical restraints. However, the brand will offer a single-cylinder 200 cc liquid-cooled petrol engine, which seems likely to be detuned from higher outputs for cost efficiency over the R25's twin in Indonesia.
If launched, the bike will be powered by a 200 cc, liquid-cooled cylinder engine producing 18.4 HP of power and 14.2 Nm of peak torque. This will produce more power output than the Yamaha R15. The bike is also expected to offer LED lighting, upside-down forks, and premium ergonomics to thrill track-day riders.
The upcoming R2 motorcycle will be directly challenging the KTM RC 200 (Rs 2.14 lakh, ex-showroom) and Hero Karizma XMR. The R2 showcases an aggressive pricing range of Rs 2.00 to 2.2 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. It fills the void left after discontinuing the Yamaha R3 and the MT-03. This could revitalize entry-level supersports, appealing to young riders craving more performance-oriented bikes without premium costs.

The brand is expected to launch the upcoming YZF-R2 motorcycle in India in 2027 or mid-2028. However, the bike will offer the opportunity to book the bike by the end of the 2026 season. with bookings by mid-2026. Stay tuned as this trademark fuels India's sportbike evolution.
Yamaha’s YZF-R2 trademark has set the stage for a potentially game-changing 200cc supersport in India, even if timelines remain unconfirmed. For now, the badge itself keeps excitement alive, hinting that Yamaha’s next big R-series chapter may be closer than it appears.
