In a bid to enhance safety for its riders, Ather has introduced its Advanced Rider Assistance System (ARAS), marking a significant step in the evolution of electric scooter safety features. This move aligns with Ather’s commitment to improving rider protection and reflects its leadership in the electric scooter market with models like the 450S and Rizta.
Ather ARAS Features
Skid Control The ARAS suite includes 'Skid Control,' a traction control system designed to manage torque delivery to the motor based on surface conditions. This feature becomes particularly beneficial on slippery surfaces such as water, gravel, or sand. We had the opportunity to test this feature on the new Rizta earlier this year, and it showed promising results in maintaining traction and stability.
Fall Safe Another critical feature is 'Fall Safe,' which automatically disengages power from the wheels if the scooter detects a fall. This function helps prevent unintended acceleration and reduces the risk of injury by stabilising the scooter immediately after a fall.
Post-Purchase Upgradability
Ather’s ARAS system is designed with both new software and hardware, enabling continuous improvements even after purchase. This upgradability ensures that riders can benefit from the latest safety advancements as they become available.
Comparison with Four-Wheeler Safety Systems
While four-wheeler safety features like airbags, anti-lock braking systems (ABS), and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have become standard, similar advancements in two-wheelers have lagged. Ather’s ARAS represents a significant leap forward in this regard, offering rider assistance technologies that were previously unseen in mass-market electric scooters.
Existing Safety Features on Ather Scooters
Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) Ather scooters are equipped with the Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), which activates flashing lights during abrupt braking at high speeds. This feature is designed to alert other road users to the imminent stop, reducing the likelihood of rear-end collisions. This technology has recently been adopted by the new TVS Jupiter 110 as well.
Additional Convenience Features Ather scooters also offer features such as live location sharing, theft detection, and towing alerts. These functionalities enhance rider security by allowing real-time tracking and location sharing, helping to prevent theft and provide assistance if needed.
Conclusion
Ather’s introduction of ARAS demonstrates a significant advancement in rider safety for electric scooters, reflecting a broader trend towards incorporating advanced safety features in two-wheelers. As the market for electric scooters continues to grow, innovations like ARAS are poised to become crucial elements in enhancing rider protection and overall safety on the roads.
