BYD Seal U Plug-in hybrid India launch with DM i technology
BYD will soon introduce the Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV in India, bringing its efficient DM-i hybrid system, long electric range, and premium features to the growing electrified vehicle segment.

BYD, a leading Chinese automotive and technology company, will introduce its DM-i 'electric-first' plug-in hybrid technology to the Indian passenger vehicle market this year. The move aims to attract buyers who want electric mobility but are concerned about long-distance range limitations.
Key Highlights
- BYD will launch the Seal U plug-in hybrid in India with DM-i technology this year
- DM-i platform offers electric-first driving with petrol engine support for longer range
- BYD has sold over 8 million plug-in hybrid vehicles globally since 2008
- The Seal U marks BYD India's first entry into the plug-in hybrid segment
BYD India announced that its first plug-in hybrid model for the country will be the Seal U. This marks the company's expansion beyond battery-electric vehicles, which have been its main focus since starting passenger vehicle operations in India in 2021.
BYD's Entry into Plug-in Hybrid Segment
Rajeev Chauhan, head of BYD India's electric passenger vehicle business, revealed the plan during the unveiling of the DM-i plug-in hybrid technology in India. He confirmed that the Seal U will be launched within this year, making it BYD India's first plug-in hybrid offering.
Currently, BYD sells four electric models in India: Atto 3, Seal, eMAX 7, and Sealion 7. Over the past five years, the company has introduced five electric products in the country. The launch of the DM-i platform represents a new direction for BYD India, providing an alternative to its existing electric vehicle lineup.
DM-i Technology and Its Benefits

BYD positions its DM-i technology as an 'electric-first' solution. The system allows the vehicle to operate mainly as an electric vehicle, with the petrol engine providing support when needed. This approach aims to address range anxiety among customers who want to adopt electric mobility but require flexibility for longer journeys.
Chauhan explained that the DM-i system differs from conventional hybrids. In DM-i vehicles, drivers primarily use electric power, while the petrol engine serves as a backup. This setup is designed to offer the advantages of electric driving without the limitations of battery range.
BYD has been developing plug-in hybrid technology for nearly 20 years. The company introduced the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2008. Since then, BYD claims to have sold over 8 million vehicles using this technology worldwide, making it one of the largest plug-in hybrid manufacturers globally.
Local Assembly and Market Strategy
BYD currently imports semi-knocked-down kits and assembles them at its facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The introduction of the DM-i platform aligns with BYD's broader focus on new-energy vehicles. The company aims to expand the adoption of electrified mobility in India by offering customers an electric-first driving experience.
Chauhan emphasized that the DM-i launch is consistent with BYD's philosophy of promoting new energy vehicles. The company intends to bring more customers into the fold by providing a solution that combines electric driving with the flexibility of a hybrid system.
