Honda's Revised India Strategy

Honda President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe stated that India remains one of the few global markets with strong growth potential. Despite this, Honda's presence in India has been limited to a few segments, restricting its ability to expand sales. Mibe acknowledged that Honda's traditional approach of developing products to global standards has not met the specific needs of Indian customers.

Mibe explained that climate, vehicle usage, and customer preferences differ widely across regions. He said Honda's global standard specifications may have been excessive for India. As a result, Honda will now redefine its product specifications to better suit the Indian market and customer requirements.

This change comes as sport utility vehicles (SUVs) dominate India's passenger vehicle market. Honda now considers India one of its three core global markets, alongside North America and Japan. The company is responding to rapid changes in the global auto industry, including the expansion of Chinese automakers. However, Chinese brands have a limited presence in India due to regulatory and geopolitical barriers, giving Japanese and Korean automakers more room to grow.

Product Expansion and Hybrid Plans

Honda's urgency reflects its shrinking lineup in India, now limited to the Elevate SUV, City sedan, and Amaze compact sedan. The Elevate re-entered Honda into the midsize SUV segment but has not overtaken established competitors like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Honda's sedan sales have also declined as more Indian buyers choose SUVs.

The sub-4-metre SUV segment is a major gap for Honda. This category is among the highest-volume in India, with models like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 3XO leading sales. Honda currently has no offering in this segment. Mibe confirmed that from 2028, Honda will launch strategic models in both the sub-4-metre and mid-size categories. The company will use local development resources and introduce new models quickly to address these gaps.

Last year, Honda announced plans to launch 10 or more models in India by 2030, including seven SUVs. This will be the largest product expansion in Honda's two decades in the country. Previously, Honda offered compact models like the Brio, Jazz, and WR-V, but most have been discontinued, leaving only the Amaze in the sub-4-metre segment.

Honda will also reassess its global powertrain portfolio and accelerate hybrid model launches. The company plans to introduce 15 hybrid models globally by March 31, 2030, focusing on a next-generation hybrid system. This shift is significant for India, where Honda has lagged behind rivals in hybrid offerings. Regulatory pressure and the need for low-emission vehicles make hybrid and electric vehicle expansion critical for Honda's competitiveness in India.
