Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed its upcoming compact Defender, expected to be named Defender Sport, will offer both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The new model will be positioned below the current Defender and is anticipated to debut in 2027. This vehicle will be the first entirely new Defender since JLR established Defender as a standalone brand under its House of Brands strategy, which also includes Range Rover and Discovery.
Key Highlights
- JLR confirms compact Defender will offer hybrid and electric powertrains.
- New model expected to debut in 2027 below current Defender.
- Built on electrified modular architecture supporting HEV and BEV options.
- Off-road capability and Defender design DNA remain priorities.
Powertrain Options and Platform Details
The compact Defender will be built on JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). While earlier reports suggested the model would be exclusively electric, JLR has now confirmed the EMA platform will support both hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrains. This decision comes as global electric vehicle adoption progresses slower than expected.
The compact Defender is expected to measure just over 4.5 metres in length. Mark Cameron, managing director for the Defender and Discovery brands, explained that JLR aims to offer customers as much choice as possible for as long as feasible. He noted that the United States, now the largest market for Defender, has complex and varied demand for powertrains. Cameron stated, “As long as we can keep selling petrol and diesel with hybridization and other forms of interim technology, we’ll continue to do so.”
Off-Road Capability and Design Challenges

The current Land Rover Defender is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in select markets. However, the older D7 platform limits the vehicle to a four-cylinder engine and a restricted all-electric range. Cameron indicated that future generations and new architectures will allow for expanded electrification technologies.
JLR remains focused on preserving the Defender’s off-road capabilities, even as it shifts to an electric-first architecture. Cameron acknowledged that the compact Defender’s size and platform may reduce wheel travel and articulation compared to the larger Defender. He emphasized, however, that the new model will maintain segment-leading off-road performance and retain the key attributes that define the Defender brand.
Designing an electric vehicle with the Defender’s upright shape and sharp window angles presents efficiency challenges. Cameron noted that the vehicle’s distinctive design impacts electric range, but he stressed the importance of maintaining Defender’s unique identity. He said, “The capability we have in our vehicles carries a penalty that works against you when you think about range for an EV. My job is to make sure we retain Defender’s DNA. Otherwise, we become another SUV brand, and there are plenty of those.”
Development Progress and Future Outlook
Development of the compact Defender is described as “well advanced,” though JLR has not confirmed the final name or specific launch date. The new model is expected to expand the Defender portfolio and strengthen the brand’s presence in the global SUV market.
