March 2024 proved to be a productive month for Mahindra & Mahindra, witnessing a 28% year-on-year (YoY) growth in passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market. While overall sales showed a 4% YoY growth, there was a slight month-on-month (MoM) decline compared to February 2024 figures.
SUV Dominance
In sport utility vehicles (SUVs), Mahindra showcased strong performance. The company sold 40,631 SUVs in March 2024, marking a 13% YoY growth from the previous year. Year-to-date (YTD) sales of Mahindra's SUVs reached 459,864 units, reflecting a significant 29% YoY growth.
Star Performers
SUV models such as Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, Thar, XUV700, XUV300, XUV400, Bolero, and Bolero Neo led the sales charts, emphasizing Mahindra's stronghold in this segment.
Struggles in Cars and Vans Segment
However, Mahindra's performance in the cars and vans segment paints a different picture. Sales data indicates a notable disparity, with zero units sold in the previous month, showcasing a preference for SUVs over other vehicle types. YTD sales for Cars + Vans plummeted by 99% compared to the previous year, reaching a mere 13 units.
Total Sales Overview
In total, passenger vehicles accounted for 40,631 units in March 2024 and 459,877 units YTD for the financial year F24.
| Vehicle Segment | March 2024 Sales | March 2023 Sales | YoY Growth |
| SUVs | 40,631 | 35,976 | 13% |
| Cars + Vans | 0 | - | - |
| Total Passenger Vehicles | 40,631 | - | - |
| Exports | 1,573 | 2,115 | -26% |
Export Performance
Regarding exports, Mahindra experienced a decline, with a total of 1,573 units shipped in March 2024, marking a 26% YoY decrease. YTD figures also witnessed a decline, with 24,663 units shipped globally, down by 23% compared to the previous year.
Statement from Mahindra & Mahindra
Veejay Nakra, President of the Automotive Division at M&M Ltd., expressed optimism, stating, "We ended the financial year F24 on a positive note with Mahindra PickUps crossing 2 lakh units during the year, which is the highest ever for any commercial vehicle in the load segment in India. In March, we sold a total of 40,631 SUVs, with a growth of 13%, and 68,413 total vehicles, a 4% growth over last year."
Carbike360 Says
While the brand's overall 4% year-on-year growth in total vehicle sales is commendable, the significant decline in exports by 26% year-on-year for March and 23% year-to-date raises questions about Mahindra's international market strategies and competitiveness. To sustain growth and remain competitive in both domestic and global markets, Mahindra may need to reevaluate its product offerings, marketing strategies, and expansion plans.
