Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has introduced a new All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) designed for defence and security forces. The ATV is based on the Thar Roxx platform but features extensive modifications for military applications. Mahindra has not released official specifications, but the vehicle is engineered to handle extreme off-road and combat conditions.
Key Highlights
- Mahindra reveals ATV based on Thar Roxx for defence and security forces
- ATV features military-specific modifications including winch gun mount and reinforced protection
- Engine options may include 2.2L diesel or 2.0L turbo petrol with 4WD system
- Vehicle is airdrop-ready and designed for extreme off-road and combat conditions
Key Features and Military Adaptations

The ATV departs from civilian SUV designs, focusing on functionality and durability. It includes a front-mounted winch, gun mount provision, jerrycan holders for extended range, dual spare wheel setup, full underbody protection, and a reinforced windshield guard. The open-body structure with a roll cage enhances durability, visibility, and operational ease in harsh environments. The vehicle is also described as airdrop-ready, supporting potential airborne deployment.
Compared to the civilian Thar Roxx, the military version has reduced body panels, enhanced structural reinforcements, and multiple tactical mounting points. The ATV features higher ground clearance, heavy-duty hardware, and aggressive off-road tyres. These adaptations prioritize reliability, ease of repair, and survivability in demanding terrains such as mountains, deserts, and remote regions.
Engine Options and Defence Capabilities
Mahindra has not disclosed engine details for the ATV. However, the Thar Roxx platform offers a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 172 hp and 370 Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 174 hp and 380 Nm. For defence use, the ATV may feature a specially tuned or more powerful engine, along with a standard 4WD system. Petrol engines are often preferred for high-altitude operations due to better performance compared to diesel in such conditions.
The ATV's design and equipment suggest it is built for extreme terrains and operational flexibility. Features like reinforced bumpers, minimalistic design, and tactical mounting points support its use in challenging environments. The vehicle’s setup aims to ensure reliability and adaptability during missions.
Mahindra’s Defence Mobility Expansion
This ATV underscores Mahindra’s expanding role in defence mobility. The company already supplies vehicles such as the Armado (ALSV), Marksman, Rakshak, and Mine Protected Vehicles to armed forces. Civilian platforms like the Scorpio are also widely used by the Indian Army. The new ATV demonstrates Mahindra’s capability to adapt civilian vehicles for specialised military roles, reflecting its focus on resilience and operational readiness.
Production timelines and deployment details for the new ATV have not been announced. The vehicle, however, highlights Mahindra's commitment to building robust, purpose-driven machines for defence and security needs.
