Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), a pioneer in India's automotive landscape, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by producing 2 million vehicles in a single calendar year for the first time. This feat cements Maruti Suzuki's position as the only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to achieve such a production volume in the passenger vehicle segment.
A Symbolic Milestone
The landmark 2 millionth vehicle, a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, rolled out from the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Manesar, Haryana. This historic accomplishment underscores the company's operational excellence and robust production infrastructure.
Breaking down the achievement, approximately 60% of the total vehicles were manufactured in the Haryana facilities, located in Gurgaon and Manesar, while the remaining 40% were produced at the Gujarat plant in Hansalpur. The top five contributors to this milestone were the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, WagonR and Brezza, all of which continue to dominate their respective market segments.
Leadership Perspective
Expressing his pride in the achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, remarked:
"The 2 million production milestone is a testament to India’s manufacturing potential and our dedication to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This achievement reflects our commitment, alongside our supplier and dealer partners, to driving economic growth, supporting nation-building, and making India’s automobile industry self-reliant and globally competitive. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our customers, employees, and value chain partners for their continued support and for being an integral part of this historic journey.”
Manufacturing Footprint and Future Expansion
Maruti Suzuki currently operates three major production facilities: two in Haryana (Gurgaon and Manesar) and one in Gujarat (Hansalpur). Together, these facilities boast an impressive combined annual production capacity of 2.35 million units.
However, the company is far from resting on its laurels. As part of its ambitious expansion strategy, Maruti Suzuki is investing in a greenfield manufacturing plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana. Scheduled to commence operations in 2025, this facility will initially have a production capacity of 2.5 lakh units annually. When fully operational, it will add a staggering 1 million units to the company's annual capacity, pushing Maruti Suzuki’s total production potential to 4 million units.
Commitment to Growth and Innovation
This milestone underscores Maruti Suzuki’s relentless focus on innovation, efficiency, and customer-centricity. The company's sustained growth is a reflection of its ability to anticipate and adapt to the evolving needs of Indian and global consumers. By leveraging India’s manufacturing prowess and the government's ‘Make in India’ initiative, Maruti Suzuki continues to set benchmarks in the automotive industry.
A Testament to Indian Manufacturing Excellence
Maruti Suzuki’s achievement is more than just a production statistic; it is a symbol of India’s burgeoning role in the global automobile industry. It highlights the country’s capability to scale operations, meet stringent quality standards, and compete with international players.
As Maruti Suzuki looks ahead, its robust expansion plans and commitment to innovation promise to further strengthen its leadership position, both domestically and globally. The milestone of producing 2 million vehicles in a single year is not just a celebration for Maruti Suzuki but also a proud moment for India's automotive industry at large.
