Maruti Suzuki is poised to expand its CNG line-up by introducing the Swift CNG, which is likely scheduled for launch next week. The CNG variant will be based on the latest generation Swift hatchback, which debuted Suzuki's new Z12E 1.2L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine in May. This addition to the S-CNG line-up could further solidify Maruti Suzuki's dominant position in India's CNG vehicle market, where the company currently holds a 73% share.
The upcoming Swift CNG variant is expected to be priced approximately Rs. 90,000 higher than its petrol-only counterparts. While specific details about the CNG kit are not yet available, industry watchers are curious to see if Maruti Suzuki will introduce a more advanced dual-cylinder system, as seen in competing models from Tata Motors and Hyundai.
Key points about the upcoming Swift CNG:
- Expected to be offered in multiple trim levels
- Likely to maintain the same feature list as the petrol variants
- Will utilize a single-cylinder CNG setup, consistent with other Maruti CNG variants
The Swift CNG will be powered by the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E engine, marking the first time this powerplant has been paired with a CNG option. While multiple trim levels are anticipated, it remains uncertain whether the CNG variant will be available in top-spec configurations.
Pricing for the Swift CNG is projected to be approximately Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000 higher than equivalent petrol-powered variants. This strategic move aligns with Maruti Suzuki's goal to boost CNG vehicle sales across India.
Currently, CNG models account for 34% of Maruti's total sales, with the company experiencing a 37% growth in CNG vehicle sales compared to the previous year. Maruti Suzuki holds a 73% share of the total CNG cars and SUVs sold in the Indian market.
Looking ahead, the automaker aims to sell over 600,000 CNG vehicles in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, a figure that would match the entire market's CNG sales in the previous fiscal year.
