KTM is developing the next-generation RC 390, which is expected to feature a twin-cylinder engine. The launch is scheduled for 2027, as confirmed by Manik Nangia, president of Probiking at Bajaj Auto. This move would align KTM with industry trends seen in models like the BMW F 450 GS and Aprilia 457, both of which use twin-cylinder setups.
Key Highlights
- Next-gen KTM RC 390 to launch in 2027 with twin-cylinder engine
- The current RC 390 uses 373cc single-cylinder engine producing 43.5 PS and 37 Nm
- The twin-cylinder platform aims to improve performance and global competitiveness
- KTM developing new 350cc engine for lower GST benefits in India
Engine and Platform Updates
Currently, KTM’s 390cc range uses single-cylinder engines. The RC 390 continues with a 373cc engine, while the 390 Duke and Adventure models have upgraded to a 398.63 cc engine. The new twin-cylinder engine, once introduced with the RC 390, is expected to be used in other 390cc KTM bikes, including the Duke and Adventure.
Switching to a twin-cylinder platform is expected to improve performance and refinement. This change would also enhance global scalability and allow for more efficient platform sharing across different models. The twin-cylinder KTM RC 390 would compete more effectively with rivals such as the Yamaha R3, Kawasaki Ninja 400, and Aprilia RS 457.
Design and Technical Features

Manik Nangia has confirmed that design sketches for the next-gen RC 390 show new LED headlights and winglets. However, detailed information about the platform and engine specifications has not been disclosed. The current RC 390 uses a 373.27 cc single-cylinder engine that produces 43.5 PS and 37 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. In comparison, the 398.63 cc engine in the 390 Duke and Adventure generates 46 PS and 39 Nm.
The RC 390 features a split-trellis tubular frame with a bolt-on subframe. Suspension components include 43 mm WP APEX USD forks and a 10-step adjustable WP APEX monoshock. Braking is managed by 320 mm and 230 mm disc brakes at the front and rear, respectively. Rider aids include MTC, Quickshifter+, Cornering ABS, and SUPERMOTO mode. The bike is also equipped with a TFT multifunction display.
Market and Regulatory Considerations

KTM is also developing a new 350cc engine for its bikes. This strategy mirrors approaches by Triumph and Bajaj. The 350cc engine allows KTM to offer models that benefit from the lower 18% GST rate for bikes under 350cc, compared to the 40% GST on bikes above 350cc. The 350cc models will target budget-conscious buyers, while the twin-cylinder models will cater to performance enthusiasts.
Future competition in this segment may include faired versions from BMW and TVS, based on a new 420cc twin-cylinder platform. KTM’s twin-cylinder upgrade is expected to strengthen its position in the global mid-capacity sportbike market.

Conclusion
The upcoming KTM RC 390 clearly signals a major step up for track-focused enthusiasts, with the new twin-cylinder platform expected to deliver stronger performance and a more premium feel. With KTM and Bajaj targeting a 2027 launch window, buyers can look forward to a sharper, more advanced supersport while the current single-cylinder RC 390 continues to cater to loyal fans.
