Key Highlights

  • Second-generation Kia Sonet set for 2027 launch with new K1 platform
  • Retains three engine options and adds a hybrid variant after 2028
  • Larger 12.3-inch displays and Level 2 ADAS expected
  • Kia targets 85,000 units annual production for new Sonet

Platform and Design Changes

The K1 platform supports advanced electrical and electronics architecture. It enables over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. The new platform may help address the current Sonet's limited rear seat space. The previous-generation Venue, a close relative of the Sonet, had similar space issues. Hyundai increased the Venue's wheelbase by 20mm to 2,520mm, improving knee and shoulder room. Kia may adopt a similar approach for the new Sonet.

Powertrain and Hybrid Plans

The next-generation Sonet is expected to retain its three engine options. These include an 83hp 1.2-litre petrol, a 120hp 1-litre turbo-petrol, and a 116hp 1.5-litre diesel. Each engine will continue with its current transmission choices. Kia is also developing a strong hybrid powertrain for the Sonet. However, this hybrid will not be available at launch. It is expected to arrive in 2028 or 2029.

Features and Safety Upgrades

The new Sonet may receive larger 12.3-inch driver display and touchscreen units, replacing the current 10.25-inch screens. Kia could also introduce a Syros-like camera and radar-based Level 2 ADAS. The current Sonet uses a camera-based Level 1 system. The K1 platform uses more ultra-high-strength steel in key areas, which could improve safety. Both the K1-based Syros and Venue have achieved five-star Bharat NCAP crash test ratings. Kia may target a similar rating for the new Sonet, as the current model has not yet been tested by Bharat NCAP.

Production and Market Position

Kia aims to produce around 85,000 units of the new Sonet annually. The updated model will compete with rivals such as the Tata Nexon, Skoda Kylaq, Maruti Brezza, and Mahindra XUV 3XO. The combination of a new platform, enhanced features, and a future hybrid option is expected to strengthen the Sonet's position in the compact SUV segment.
