Nissan India is preparing to expand its product portfolio with the introduction of the Tekton and its three-row variant. This will bring the total number of Nissan models in India to four. These models are currently shared with Renault, Nissan's alliance partner. However, Nissan has signaled intentions to launch its own distinct models in the Indian market.
Key Highlights
- Nissan India to expand portfolio to four models with Tekton and its three-row variant
- Terrano PHEV SUV from Dongfeng JV likely to be first new model for India
- Dongfeng JV enables faster vehicle development and cost-effective manufacturing
- Nissan reserves 250000 units annual capacity at Chennai plant for new models
Nissan’s Expansion Strategy

Thierry Sabbagh, president for the Middle East, KSA, CIS, and India, stated that Nissan is keen to introduce unique models beyond those shared with Renault. While he did not specify details, he referenced the Patrol and hinted at future products. Industry sources suggest that Nissan may bring vehicles from its Dongfeng joint venture to India. This partnership with Chinese automaker Dongfeng has existed since 2003 and operates on a 50-50 basis.
The first Dongfeng JV model likely to enter India is expected to be the production version of the Terrano PHEV concept. This concept was recently showcased at the Beijing Auto Show 2026. The Terrano PHEV is an SUV based on the Nissan Frontier Pro and Dongfeng Z9 pick-ups. It uses the same ladder-frame chassis and offers both a conventional internal combustion engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This would mark Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid SUV for the Indian market.
Manufacturing and Market Potential
Nissan aims to manufacture the new SUV locally. Although Nissan no longer owns a stake in the Chennai plant it once shared with Renault, the company has reserved an annual capacity of 250,000 units at this facility. The plant’s total capacity stands at 500,000 units per year, which is currently underutilized. This allows space for the new Dongfeng range, provided Nissan commits to additional investments.
China offers a low-cost manufacturing base and vehicles with extensive features, both attractive to Indian buyers. The Dongfeng JV can develop a new vehicle in about 30 months, compared to the typical 60 months elsewhere. This rapid development could help Nissan bring new models to India faster than before.
Guillaume Cartier, chief performance officer at Nissan Motor Co., confirmed the company’s renewed focus on India. He stated that Nissan now has a clear strategy and intends to remain and succeed in the Indian market. The company has not announced a specific launch date for the Dongfeng JV models, but industry estimates suggest the first vehicle could arrive within two years if plans proceed as expected.

CarBike 360 Says
Nissan’s strategy to bring Dongfeng JV models to India signals a renewed push in one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets. With the Terrano PHEV leading the charge, the brand is clearly aligning with electrification trends while rebuilding its portfolio. If executed well, this move could help Nissan regain relevance and strengthen its foothold in India’s competitive SUV segment.
