Nissan unveils AI‑defined vehicle strategy, new Elgrand to lead next‑gen ProPILOT rollout
Nissan is going all‑in on AI, confirming an AI‑defined vehicle roadmap that will embed intelligent driver‑assist and autonomous capabilities across most future models.

Nissan Motor Corporation has announced a major shift in its global strategy, focusing on artificial intelligence and a streamlined product lineup. The company plans to reduce its global model range from 56 to 45 by phasing out underperforming models. This move aims to concentrate resources on growth areas and improve efficiency.
Key Highlights
- Nissan to reduce global model range from 56 to 45 by phasing out low-performing nameplates.
- AI Drive Technology to be deployed across 90 percent of Nissan's lineup over the long term
- Nissan Elgrand will debut next-generation ProPILOT with end-to-end autonomous technologies by 2027
- Sales targets include one million units annually in the US and China, and 550000 units in Japan by 2030
- Nissan's India strategy includes new models on Renault platforms and an export target of over 200000 units.
AI Integration and Model Consolidation

Nissan's new vision, called "Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life," centers on AI-Defined Vehicles. The automaker intends to deploy its AI Drive Technology across 90% of its lineup over the long term. The Nissan Elgrand will be the first model to feature the next-generation ProPILOT system, which includes end-to-end autonomous driving technologies. Nissan expects to launch this technology by the end of fiscal year 2027.
About 80% of Nissan's global volume will come from three core vehicle families built on shared platforms. This consolidation is designed to increase per-model volumes and reduce development costs. The company also plans to phase out low-performing nameplates to focus on models with higher growth potential.
Sales Targets and Market Expansion
Nissan has set ambitious sales targets for the coming years. The company aims to sell one million units annually in both the United States and China by fiscal year 2030. In Japan, Nissan targets 550,000 units per year. The automaker will also use China as an export base, with the N7 electric sedan set for Latin America and ASEAN markets, and the Frontier Pro pickup truck heading to the Middle East.
New models in the pipeline include the all-new Rogue Hybrid e-POWER, the return of the Xterra, and the all-new Juke EV. The INFINITI brand remains a key part of Nissan's global strategy, with several new and refreshed models planned.
Restructuring and Regional Strategies

Nissan's restructuring plan will be updated alongside its full-year financial results next month. The plan, led by President and CEO Ivan Espinosa, focuses on reducing fixed costs, rationalizing production, and restoring profitability. Nissan has faced challenges from declining sales in China and increased competition from local electric vehicle manufacturers.
The company has also navigated the aftermath of failed merger talks with Honda. However, CEO Espinosa has indicated that selective collaboration with Honda, especially in India, remains possible. In India, Nissan relies on its alliance with Renault for platform sharing and manufacturing. Production at Oragadam supports both domestic sales and export targets of over 200,000 units combined.
Recent additions to Nissan's India portfolio include the Gravite and Magnite. The company is preparing to launch the Tekton B-SUV and a three-row C-SUV, both based on Renault's Duster platform, to address gaps in its lineup.
Long-Term Vision and Competitive Positioning
Nissan positions its new long-term vision as a move beyond crisis management. The strategy aims to improve competitiveness through model consolidation and advanced AI technologies. These measures are expected to enhance per-model volumes, lower development costs, and strengthen Nissan's position in key markets.
