In a dynamic turn of events, the automotive landscape witnessed a significant shakeup in December 2023, as the top selling cars in India took center stage, constituting a staggering 79% of the month's total car sales. Maruti Suzuki dominated with 9 models, closely followed by Hyundai with 5, Mahindra with 4, Tata with 3, and Toyota with 2, while Kia and Honda each secured a spot in this exclusive list. Maruti Suzuki's models alone accounted for over 43% of the top sales, highlighting the brand's continued stronghold in the Indian market.
Top Performers and Notable Changes:
Tata Nexon emerged as the unrivaled champion of December 2023, securing the top position with a commendable 15,284 units sold. This marked a historic achievement for Tata Motors, as two of its models, including the Punch at third place, claimed spots in the top 3. Maruti's Dzire clinched the second position with 14,012 units, while the Ertiga secured the fourth spot as the best-selling MUV.
Surprisingly, the Mahindra Scorpio surged into the top 10, outpacing competitors like Seltos and Creta with 11,355 dispatches. Notably, the Toyota Innova siblings showcased remarkable growth with a staggering 21,656% year-on-year increase, reaching 11,355 units dispatched.
Shifts and Expected Revival:
Hyundai Creta faced a temporary setback, dropping out of the top 10, while Venue claimed the ninth spot. However, the upcoming launch of the New Creta in mid-January 2024 is expected to reignite Hyundai's prominence in the rankings.
Additionally, the Kia Seltos maintained its position as the best-selling Kia model, achieving an impressive volume of around 10,000 units. The sales dynamics are set to witness further changes with the introduction of the new facelifted Hyundai Creta, anticipated to elevate the model's sales.
Honda's Return and Closing Remarks:
A notable inclusion in the top 25 list was Honda's Elevate, making a resurgence with 4,376 units sold. This resurgence prompts contemplation on what could have been if Honda continued with diesel engines in India.
As we reflect on the transformative shifts in the December 2023 top 25 car sales, it becomes evident that the industry is evolving rapidly.
