The Indian automobile industry is buzzing after the revamp of the goods and services tax (GST) framework to be overhauled on both passenger and commercial vehicles. As per the latest reports, it is suggested that the Indian government may soon cut down the GST rates on SUVs and sedans from 50% to 40%. At the moment, the government taxes at a steep 50% in most cases.

However, the ongoing GST rate amendment raises concerns that the Indian government, in collaboration with the GST council, may impose a new cess on higher-end vehicles. On Thursday, after the parliament session was over, a meeting was held among the ministers discussing the rate rationalization, as some of the Indian states demanded a cess on top of the 40% tax slab.

A final decision is yet to be made by the GTS council. However, reports suggest that the government of India is planning to leverage the 50% tax on luxury cars and move to a 40% tax slab. With this, automakers, dealerships, and financial institutions are already gearing up for what could be the most significant revival push for passenger vehicles in recent years.

An Initial Push to SUVs and Sedans

India’s automotive industry has been clubbed with high GST rates, due to which many SUVs and sedans were priced at a premium due to size, technology, and imported content. The potential cut to 40% would unlock affordability and expand their customer base, particularly in urban and semi-urban regions where demand is strong.

SUVs Might Witness High Sales Figures

With the introduction of the new tax reforms, SUV sales might move on an upward trajectory in the Indian automotive market. Most preferred models, like the HyundaiTucson, Jeep Compass, and Mahindra XUV 700, are consistently increasing their sales charts. Even the existing cess, which was originally introduced for 5 years to compensate the state, has been extended for three more years.

Sedans Could Boast Sales Figures

Sedan cars were dominant on Indian roads. However, with the latest industrial trends and changing customer preferences, sedans have lost their ground. Even after the high taxation and consumers' preferences have disintegrated the mid-size sedans from the market. However, tax reduction would benefit both small and big cars. Some popular models on Indian roads, like the Honda Amaze, Skoda Slavia, and Hyundai Verna, could benefit, giving sedans a second chance to reclaim relevance.

Automakers Welcome the Move

Many automotive brands have welcomed this decision, as a reduction in tax will create better opportunities for financial planning across the model and will encourage the industry to put more investment into the development of engines and EV platforms. Currently, SUVs and sedans exceeding 4 meters might be categorized under 50% in tax, with 28% GST and 22% cess.

Conclusion

As the new GST reforms are still under consideration, excitement prevails among the automakers and customers. If the rules are implemented, customers will be able to purchase cars that were previously out of their budget. The GST revision could mark a turning point, bringing affordability back into larger vehicles.
