Tata Altroz iCNG becomes India’s first CNG automatic premium hatchback
Tata Motors has introduced an AMT gearbox on the Altroz iCNG, making it India’s first premium hatchback to pair a CNG powertrain with an automatic transmission. Priced from Rs 8.69 lakh in India.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. has added an automatic option to the Altroz iCNG, introducing an AMT gearbox that makes it the first and only premium hatchback in India to pair a CNG powertrain with two-pedal convenience. Priced at Rs 8.69 lakh (ex‑showroom), the new variant neatly blends city‑friendly ease with wallet‑friendly running costs. Ideal for buyers who hate constant shifting.
With this launch, Tata Motors further leans into its ‘Feel Special’ promise, giving Altroz customers one of the widest multi‑powertrain choices in the premium hatchback segment. The Altroz can already be had with petrol, diesel, and CNG options, and now the iCNG AMT brings together efficiency, safety, and comfort in a single, city-ready package, aimed at value-conscious, feature-hungry families nationwide.
Segment-first CNG automatic
The AMT-equipped Tata Altroz iCNG builds on the brand’s recent Altroz update, which introduced a broader mix of petrol, diesel, and iCNG powertrains along with both DCA and AMT automatic transmissions in the line-up. By adding an automatic to the CNG variant, Tata effectively plugs a white space in the market where CNG buyers previously had to compromise with manual gearboxes.
This move aligns with the growing shift towards CNG in urban centers, where fleet and private customers are looking to offset rising fuel costs without giving up on comfort or premiumness. For many of these buyers, an automatic CNG hatch that still feels upmarket inside and out is exactly the kind of no-compromise solution they’ve been waiting for.
Refreshed Interiors

Even in its CNG avatar, the Altroz continues to offer a long equipment list, including features such as a voice‑controlled sunroof on higher variants, connected‑car tech, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, wireless charging, and leatherette upholstery, depending on trim. This helps the car feel properly premium, rather than a stripped‑down CNG special.
Proven iCNG hardware and performance
Under the skin, the Tata Altroz iCNG continues with Tata’s 1.2‑litre, three‑cylinder iCNG powertrain that delivers around 72–73 HP of power and 103 Nm in CNG mode, while producing roughly 88 hp and 115 Nm when running on petrol. The engine can be started directly in CNG mode, reducing petrol consumption for primarily city-focused users.
Tata’s single advanced ECU manages fuel switching seamlessly, which helps the car transition between petrol and CNG without the jerkiness that earlier-generation CNG kits were known for. Suspension tuning on the iCNG has also been stiffened at the rear to compensate for the additional weight of the twin CNG cylinders, helping the car feel planted even with a full load.
Twin-cylinder tech with usable boot space
A key differentiator for the Altroz iCNG range is Tata’s twin‑cylinder CNG layout, which places two 30‑litre cylinders under the boot floor instead of a single bulky tank inside the luggage bay. This clever packaging frees up around 210 litres of usable boot space, a huge advantage over many CNG rivals that virtually eliminate luggage capacity.
Safety Suites
The Tata Altroz has long traded on its reputation as one of India’s safest hatchbacks, having achieved a 5‑star Global NCAP adult occupant safety rating thanks to its ALFA architecture. The iCNG versions build on this with specific CNG safety measures, including a reinforced rear structure and a six‑point mounting system for the cylinders.
