Tata Motors is set to kick off a major new phase in its luxury arena as it begins assembly of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicles at its new greenfield plant near Chennai from February 9, 2026. The Panapakkam facility in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, will serve as a key hub for premium models, significantly deepening the brand’s localization strategy in India.
The move not only marks the operational debut of Tata Motors’ latest manufacturing site but also signals a clear intent to scale up its presence in the high-margin luxury segment across the nation. With capacity constraints at existing plants and a growing appetite for premium SUVs, the new facility has been designed with generous headroom for future volumes, exports, and advanced vehicle architectures.
Tata Motors has confirmed that JLR assembly will commence at its Panapakkam plant near Chennai from February 9, 2026, marking the first time JLR vehicles are built at this location. The plant, part of a Rs 9,000 crore investment in Tamil Nadu, will cater to both the Tata Motors and JLR portfolios over time.
Initially, the facility will focus on completely knocked down (CKD) assembly of JLR models, with the Range Rover Evoque widely expected to be among the first products to roll out, though Tata Motors has so far refrained from officially naming specific nameplates.

The Panapakkam plant has been engineered with an annual capacity of up to 250,000 vehicles once fully ramped up, far above current luxury car demand in India but aligned with long-term ambitions. Spread across a large land parcel, the facility allows Tata Motors and JLR to phase in additional lines, technologies, and powertrain options as the market evolves.
Beyond conventional models, the plant is expected to play a role in next-generation architectures, including future premium EVs from both Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover.

Senior leadership at Tata Motors has underlined that most of its current facilities are running near their capacity limits, prompting the need to operationalize the Panapakkam site.
The Chennai plant gives the company a fresh arena to work with over the next few years, easing bottlenecks and allowing clearer segmentation between mass-market and premium operations.
For now, JLR’s CKD assembly in Pune will continue in parallel, with any shift or consolidation of models to Chennai to be detailed at a later stage.

Local assembly at the new Chennai-area plant strengthens JLR’s cost position in a segment dominated by German luxury brands. CKD operations help mitigate steep import duties on fully built imports, creating headroom for more competitive pricing and better specification mixes.
Although JLR’s India volumes remain below five figures annually and trail rivals such as BMW, the company’s management has reiterated India’s importance as a long-term growth market. With shorter supply chains, enhanced localization, and a modern high-capacity facility backing it, JLR now has a more robust platform to expand its footprint in India’s maturing luxury and premium SUV space.
