Tata Motors Makes Plan To Acquire Iveco Trucks with $4.5 Billion Deal
Tata Motors is making a strategic move to acquire Italian truck manufacturer Iveco in a $4.5 billion deal, marking a major step in expanding its footprint in the global commercial vehicle industry.

Tata Motors is once again set to make headlines in the automotive world. The Indian automotive giant is ready to acquire the Italian commercial vehicle giant Iveco under a $4.5 billion deal. This deal is said to be the second-largest acquisition of Tata Motors after Corus. Tata Motors will also take over the inventory production and research and development of the Iveco trucks as the deal moves further.
According to the latest reports, the board of members of Tata Motors and Iveco will be sitting together in a meeting on July 30, 2025, to give closure over the contract agreement. This transaction, expected to be announced soon after both boards convene on July 30, will mark Tata Motors' most significant foray into the global automotive market after acquiring Jaguar Land Rover in 2008.
What’s with the acquisition?
Under the current acquisition plan, Tata Motors will purchase the 27.1% stake from Exor. It is the investment company of the Agnelli family, which is the principal stakeholder in Iveco. Exor also controls 43.1% of the voting rights. However, if the acquisition deal takes place, it will be Tata’s largest-ever automotive business deal. It will eclipse its $2.3 billion deal for the JLR acquisition.
Although Tata has to make plans to acquire the remaining shares of Iveco Trucks, as the company has sold its dividend to various subsidiaries. The company breaks up into various manufacturing sectors; only Iveco’s defence and commercial units are to be retained further. Both of these units are slated for a separate distribution or spin-off.
Strategic Ambition and Market Impact
Iveco is one of the leading Italian commercial vehicle giants. The brand has earned respect among prominent European truck manufacturers after Volvo, Daimler, and Traton. Renowned for its robust lineup of trucks, buses, and powertrains, Iveco generates nearly three-quarters of its revenues in Europe and maintains vital operations across Latin America. The brand’s total market capitalization was about $6.1 billion.
For Tata Motors, acquiring Iveco’s engineering excellence and market presence will act as a strategic business deal. With this deal, Tata will be able to expand its global reach into the automotive world. Especially across the high-growth European and Latin American landscape.
What’s next?
Well, if the acquisition takes place, Tata Motors will expand its research and development through Iveco's technical aids. Tata Motors will surely face high-cost operations from the markets of Europe and Latin America, as they import with heavy duties. There are no official updates that the brand will merge the names into each other or work as a separate entity.
With the Iveco trucks deal, we might be able to see the new version of Indian trucks carrying the engineering excellence from the Italian manufacturer. However, Tata's acquisition of Iveco will be a strategic move to enter the premium commercial vehicle segments globally and stand among the competitors like Daimler and Volvo.
