Tesla reclaimed its position as the world's leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in the first quarter of 2026. The company surpassed China's BYD by selling 358,023 EVs globally from January to March. BYD sold 310,389 units during the same period, resulting in a difference of over 47,000 vehicles.
Key Highlights
- Tesla sold 358023 EVs globally in Q1 2026 surpassing BYD by over 47000 units
- Model 3 and Model Y made up 95 percent of Tesla's total sales in this period
- BYD's Q1 2026 sales dropped by over 25 percent compared to the previous year
- China's new EV policies and tax changes affected BYD's domestic sales performance
This marks a 6.3 percent increase in Tesla's sales compared to the first quarter of 2025. In contrast, BYD experienced a decline of more than 25 percent in its EV sales year-on-year. Tesla's entry-level models, the Model 3 and Model Y, accounted for 95 percent of its total sales in this period.
Recent Sales Performance
Tesla's modest growth in early 2026 allowed it to move ahead of BYD, which had overtaken Tesla in total annual sales in 2025. In 2025, BYD led the global EV market by selling 2,256,714 vehicles, while Tesla sold 1,636,129 units. This shift was driven by BYD's 28 percent year-on-year growth and a 9 percent decline in Tesla's volumes.
For additional context, Tesla delivered 1,789,226 vehicles in 2024, narrowly exceeding BYD’s 1,764,992 units. The competition between the two manufacturers has remained close, with market leadership changing hands over recent years.
Market Factors and Policy Changes
Policy changes in China have influenced recent sales trends. As of January 1, new EV trade-in subsidies now cap support at 20,000 yuan (Rs 2.7 lakh). Previously, buyers received this amount regardless of the vehicle's price. Additionally, China has started reducing its EV sales tax break, lowering the exemption from 10 percent to 5 percent.
These policy adjustments have impacted consumer incentives and may have contributed to BYD's sales decline in early 2026. The figures referenced are based on data converted as of April 6 at 3:19 pm.
Tesla Model Updates
Tesla recently discontinued the Model S and Model X, two of its longest-running EVs. The company is preparing to launch two new models: the two-seat Cybercab and the second-generation Roadster. However, Tesla has not yet announced specific release dates for these vehicles.
