March 2026 Sales Leaders
The Maruti WagonR led the hatchback segment with 17,025 units sold, despite a slight year-on-year decline of 0.87%. The Maruti Baleno followed closely, selling 16,392 units and recording a strong growth of 32.65%. The Maruti Swift ranked third, with 14,545 units sold, but saw a notable decline of 18.04% compared to the previous year.
The Maruti Alto maintained its relevance in the entry-level hatchback space, selling 11,515 units and achieving a 16.70% year-on-year growth. Tata Tiago, including its electric variant, registered 7,119 units, marking a 10.41% decline. Hyundai i20 posted 5,614 units, reflecting a 26.10% increase, while Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS remained stable at 5,032 units with marginal growth of 0.84%.
Toyota Glanza, based on the Baleno, recorded 3,470 units, experiencing a minor decline of 0.89%. Tata Altroz showed significant improvement, growing 41.38% year-on-year with 2,344 units sold.
Segment Trends and Other Models
Among Maruti’s smaller hatchbacks, Celerio sales dropped 40.34% to 1,353 units, and Ignis fell 34.21% to 1,250 units. S-Presso experienced the steepest decline, dropping 87.36% to 226 units. Renault Kwid also declined by 15.60%, selling 449 units in March 2026.
In the electric hatchback segment, MG Comet EV posted strong growth of 294.22% year-on-year, reaching 682 units, though from a low base. Citroen C3 saw a sharp 440% increase, selling 648 units. In contrast, Citroen eC3 EV dropped 67.80% to just 38 units, indicating inconsistent demand for affordable electric hatchbacks.
Month-on-month, hatchback sales rose by 5.79% from 82,904 units in February 2026. WagonR and Alto contributed significantly, growing 14.38% and 17.66% respectively. Baleno also saw a 12.03% increase. Swift sales were largely flat, down 1.94%. Hyundai i20 and Grand i10 NIOS had minor month-on-month declines. Celerio showed a strong recovery at 56.96%, while Ignis and S-Presso continued to decline.
Overall, the hatchback segment showed modest growth in March 2026. Strong performances from Baleno, Alto, and Altroz balanced declines in Swift, entry-level Maruti models, and select electric vehicles. Maruti Suzuki remains the dominant player, but changing buyer preferences and rising SUV demand are affecting traditional hatchback sales volumes.
