The Indian SUV market is seeing a surge in demand for rugged, boxy vehicles. Carmakers are responding with new models designed to appeal to buyers seeking both style and off-road capability. Three upcoming SUVs—Jetour T2, Mahindra Vision S, and Renault Bridger—are set to enter the market soon, each bringing a distinct approach to the boxy SUV trend.
Key Highlights
- Jetour T2 expected to launch in India with boxy design and turbo-petrol engines
- Mahindra Vision S concept previews future rugged SUVs with possible electric powertrain options
- Renault Bridger to offer 400 litre boot and 200mm ground clearance in sub four metre segment
Jetour T2 Prepares for Launch
JSW-backed Jetour is preparing to enter India, with the T2 likely to be its first offering. The Jetour T2 features a boxy stance, upright nose, squared wheel arches, and extensive body cladding. These design elements give it a strong off-road presence. Internationally, the T2 is available with turbo-petrol engines and an all-wheel-drive system. For the Indian market, Jetour is expected to localise the T2 to keep prices competitive.
Mahindra Vision S Concept Preview
Mahindra has showcased its Vision S concept, hinting at the brand's future direction for rugged SUVs. The Vision S adopts an upright stance, flat surfaces, and squared-off proportions, creating a robust and purposeful look. While detailed specifications are not yet available, Mahindra is expected to retain the core design for the production model. The company may offer multiple powertrain options, including electric variants, to cater to a wider audience.
Renault Bridger Targets Compact SUV Segment
Renault recently unveiled the Bridger concept, previewing a new sub-four-metre SUV for India. The Bridger is designed and developed locally and will be positioned below the Kiger in Renault's lineup. The SUV features a boxy silhouette, squared wheel arches, a flat grille with illuminated lettering, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. Despite its compact size, the Bridger offers a practical 400-litre boot and approximately 200mm of ground clearance. Powertrain options include a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and an all-electric variant.
Growing Trend for Boxy SUVs
More Indian buyers are choosing SUVs that combine rugged design with everyday practicality. The introduction of models like the Jetour T2, Mahindra Vision S, and Renault Bridger signals a shift towards lifestyle-oriented, boxy SUVs. This trend is expected to continue, with more manufacturers likely to enter the segment in the coming years.
