Triumph's upcoming Speed 400, now equipped with a new 350cc engine, has been seen for the first time before its official launch. The company plans to introduce its 350cc motorcycle lineup in India on 6 April 2026. Recent spy shots have provided key details about the new model.
Key Highlights
- Triumph Speed 400 with new 350cc engine spotted before India launch
- Engine downsized to 349cc to benefit from lower GST tax rates
- Design and colour scheme remain unchanged from current Speed 400
- New engine branded as TR Series with slightly lower performance expected
Engine Downsizing and Tax Implications
Triumph, in collaboration with Bajaj and KTM, has worked to reduce the displacement of its 400cc engines to below 350cc. This move follows the introduction of GST 2.0, which increased the tax rate on motorcycles above 350cc from 31 percent to 40 percent. In contrast, the tax rate for bikes with engines up to 350cc has dropped to 18 percent, down from the previous 28 percent.
The current Triumph 400 lineup uses a 389.15cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 39.5bhp and 37.5Nm of torque. Downsizing to a 349cc engine allows Triumph to benefit from the lower tax rate, potentially making the motorcycle more affordable for buyers.
Design and Performance Details
The new Speed 400 retains its existing design, colour options, and badging. The motorcycle spotted in the spy images features the Racing Red and Pearl Metallic White colour scheme. At first glance, it appears identical to the current Speed 400 model.
The main change lies in the engine. The new 349cc motor, branded as the ‘TR Series’ according to the engine block badging, is expected to offer slightly lower power and performance compared to the outgoing 389.15cc unit. However, the overall appearance and branding of the bike remain unchanged.
Pricing Expectations
With the shift to a smaller engine and the resulting tax benefits, there is an expectation that the price of the new Speed 400 could decrease. However, sources indicate that pricing is likely to remain consistent with the current 400cc lineup, despite the lower tax rate and engine downsizing.
