Key Highlights

  • KTM Adventure test mule spotted with new engine platform
  • New twin-cylinder engine expected to produce 60 to 70 bhp
  • Platform likely to replace 690 single-cylinder due to emission norms
  • Engine development began before Bajaj Auto acquired KTM
  • New platform expected across Duke, Adventure, and RC models by 2027

New Engine Platform Details

The new engine platform is likely being developed by KTM Austria. This development began before Bajaj Auto acquired ownership of KTM. The engine is not the sub-500cc parallel-twin currently in development for the Indian market. Instead, it appears to be a new middleweight engine.

The test mule, seen in early development stages, features minimal bodywork. This is similar to the KTM Duke prototype that was recently spotted with the same engine. The Adventure test mule is equipped with longer travel WP suspension at both the front and rear, as well as WP brake calipers.

The engine and exhaust setup closely resemble those on the upcoming Duke model. Sources suggest this new engine could bridge the gap between KTM’s 390 and 790 lineups. The expected power output is around 60 to 70 bhp, potentially higher.

Reasons for Platform Change

Replacing the 690 single-cylinder engine with a new twin-cylinder platform is a strategic move. Single-cylinder engines are increasingly challenged by tightening emission regulations. A twin-cylinder engine offers improved refinement, which could enhance the overall riding experience for KTM customers.

Information about the new engine platform remains limited. However, KTM is expected to introduce this platform by 2027. The new engine will likely be used in several models, including the Duke, Adventure, and RC ranges.

With this change, KTM aims to compete with other middleweight motorcycles, such as the Triumph 660 series. The move could strengthen KTM’s position in the global middleweight motorcycle segment.
