Ampere Primus

The Ampere Primus is a notable entry in the electric scooter market, designed with a focus on practicality, efficiency, and user-friendly features. Its design is characterised by a moderate aesthetic that may not immediately stand out but reveals its charm through thoughtful details. The Arctic Stern design at the front, complemented by LED daytime running lights (DRLs), contributes to its contemporary look. The overall build quality is sturdy, with hard plastic covers enhancing the wheelbase's visual appeal while concealing essential components like the battery and electric motor underneath. The rear design, reminiscent of traditional scooters like the TVS Scooty Pep, adds to its familiarity, although it maintains a distinct identity with chunkier proportions at the back compared to the front.

The Primus includes features such as a digital instrument console that displays essential information like speed, charge status, and distance remaining. Additionally, it supports Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to access navigation features and receive alerts for calls and messages through the dedicated Ampere Companion app.

The ride quality of the Ampere Primus is characterised by a stable and comfortable experience, even at higher speeds. The scooter features a slightly stiffer suspension setup, which effectively absorbs bumps and irregularities in the road surface. This setup contributes to a composed ride, allowing riders to feel secure when leaning into corners, despite the fact that this segment typically does not prioritise cornering stability.

The seat is designed for comfort, being wide and long enough to accommodate both the rider and a pillion comfortably. Riders of various heights can easily touch the ground thanks to the low seat height, enhancing confidence during stops.

In terms of handling, the Ampere Primus demonstrates intuitive steering response and agility, despite its relatively heavier weight of 130 kg compared to other electric scooters like the TVS iQube. This weight distribution, aided by a mid-mounted motor and low-set battery pack, allows for confident manoeuvrability without feeling cumbersome.

The Ampere Primus is powered by a 3 kWh Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a mid-mounted motor delivering 3.4 kW nominal power (4 kW peak). Key performance metrics include a top speed which Ampere claims to be 77 km/h and observed speeds up to 94 km/h depending on riding conditions, an acceleration of 0-40 km/h in approximately 4.2 seconds, an ARAI-certified range of 107 km per charge, a real-world range around 80-85 km, and a full charge in 5 hours using a regular charger; fast charging reduces this time to about 2.5 hours.
