BMW India has launched the seventh-generation 2025 BMW M5, the most powerful iteration of the iconic sports sedan yet. Priced at ₹1.99 crore (ex-showroom), the new M5 arrives as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit, offering cutting-edge technology, an aggressive design, and a groundbreaking plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2025 BMW M5 retains the legendary 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, now electrified with a hybrid system borrowed from BMW’s flagship XM SUV. The internal combustion engine delivers 577 bhp and 750 Nm of torque, while the electric motor adds 196 bhp and 280 Nm. This brings the total system output to an astonishing 717 bhp and 1,001 Nm.
Power is channelled through an 8-speed automatic transmission to BMW’s rear-biassed xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The M5 also includes a 2WD mode for purists seeking a rear-wheel-drive experience. Despite its weight of 2.4 tonnes, 500 kg heavier than its predecessor. The M5 sprints from 0-100 kmph in a blistering 3.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph, but the optional M Driver’s Package increases it to 305 kmph.
An 18.6 kWh battery pack powers the hybrid system, offering a pure-electric range of 67-69 km (WLTP) and a top electric-only speed of 140 kmph. Charging options include AC charging up to 7.4 kW. The hybrid system features three driving modes:
- Hybrid Mode: Balances efficiency and performance.
- Electric Mode: Enables emissions-free driving at up to 140 kmph.
- eControl Mode: Focuses on brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery charge levels.
Chassis and Handling
The M5’s chassis has been comprehensively upgraded to handle its increased power. The front features a double-wishbone axle with M5-specific hubs for improved rigidity, while the rear employs a five-link axle with reinforced components. Additional strut tower bracing, underfloor reinforcement, and strengthened mounts enhance stability and dynamics.
BMW’s Adaptive M Suspension includes electronically controlled dampers, allowing the driver to tailor the ride. Rear-wheel steering comes standard, improving agility at low speeds and stability at high speeds.
Exterior Design
The 2025 BMW M5’s design is a striking departure from the standard 5 Series. The front fascia features a redesigned M kidney grille with gloss black surrounds, sharper air intakes, and a pronounced lip spoiler. The model is wider by 76 mm at the front and 48 mm at the rear, giving it an aggressive stance.
Flared wheel arches, a sculpted rear bumper with vertical reflectors, and quad gloss-black exhaust tips add to its muscular aesthetic. The sedan rides on staggered M light-alloy wheels, 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear, wrapped in high-performance tires. A standard carbon-fibre roof enhances weight distribution, while an optional panoramic sunroof is available for added luxury.
Interior and Features
The cabin of the new M5 is a blend of luxury and cutting-edge technology. Highlights include:
- M Multifunction Seats: Offering exceptional comfort and support, with illuminated M5 logos.
- M Leather Steering Wheel: Newly redesigned with additional controls for track-ready performance.
- Curved Display: Combining a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, powered by BMW Operating System 8.5. Features include QuickSelect navigation, cloud-based maps, and augmented reality.
- Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System: Providing an immersive audio experience.
The feature list also includes a head-up display, four-zone automatic climate control, and ambient lighting with M-specific themes. Interior trims are available in premium Merino leather with colour combinations like Kyalami Orange and Red/Black.
Safety and Driver Assistance
BMW has equipped the M5 with a comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance technologies:
- Standard Features: Include Parking Assistant Plus, a Surround View Camera, Reversing Assistant, airbags, ABS, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
- Optional Driving Assistant Professional: Offers semi-autonomous features such as Active Cruise Control, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, and Cross Traffic Warning.
Comparative Edge
The 2025 BMW M5 positions itself as a performance benchmark. While priced slightly above the recently launched Mercedes-AMG C63 (₹1.95 crore), the M5 outshines its rival with a larger V8 engine, higher output, and a significantly better electric-only range.
Conclusion
The 2025 BMW M5 represents a leap forward in luxury performance sedans, combining exhilarating power with modern hybrid efficiency. Its aggressive design, advanced chassis, and tech-rich interior make it a standout choice for enthusiasts and luxury seekers alike. At ₹1.99 crore, the new M5 justifies its price as a groundbreaking addition to BMW’s M division.
