May 2026 registrations rose 7.6% year-on-year but dipped 6.6% from April's 1.97 million units. This month-on-month decline aligns with typical seasonal patterns and does not indicate weakening demand. The rural segment contributed about 485,800 units, expanding at nearly 20% year-on-year. In contrast, metro cities added 232,600 units, growing at 6.1%. This highlights a shift in demand from urban to rural areas.

Motorcycles remained the dominant segment, accounting for 59.4% of total registrations. Scooters made up 30.2%. Electric scooters reached an 8.8% share, or nearly one in eleven registrations, signaling a significant shift toward electric mobility.

Brand and Model Rankings

Hero MotoCorp continued to lead with over 517,000 units sold, holding a 28.5% market share. However, this was a slight decrease compared to the previous year. Honda followed closely with a 24.8% share and 9.3% growth in volume, narrowing the gap to 3.7 percentage points. TVS posted 11.1% growth, securing a 19.6% share. Bajaj Auto held 10.9%, while Yamaha achieved the highest growth among smaller brands at 16.4%.

At the model level, the Hero Splendor Plus was the top seller with about 323,000 units. Honda Activa led the scooter category at around 206,000 units. The TVS Jupiter followed with 119,000 units, and the Bajaj Pulsar registered 113,000 units.

Electric Vehicle Segment

Electric scooters made up 8.8% of total registrations. Ather Energy led the electric vehicle segment with 28,186 units and a growth rate of 99.9%. Ampere recorded 77.9% growth. Ola Electric, however, saw a 20.2% year-on-year decline, showing increased competition in the electric segment.

Regional Demand Patterns

Delhi led Indian cities with 46,197 two-wheeler registrations. Bengaluru followed with 41,717, Hyderabad with 33,010, Chennai with 27,883, and Pune with 26,941. Uttar Pradesh was the top state, with about 314,000 units sold. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu followed with 182,000 and 142,000 units, respectively. The data shows that growth is not limited to one region or demographic group.

Outlook for the Sector

Inventory levels remained stable at 37 to 40 days. Commuter demand held steady, and JATO Dynamics expects the segment to remain strong through the second half of 2026. The key question is whether brands with limited rural presence and smaller electric portfolios can close the gap with leaders like Hero, Honda, and TVS.

The strong 20 percent rural growth in May 2026 signals a shifting dynamic in India’s two-wheeler market, with hinterland demand becoming a key growth driver. Hero MotoCorp’s leadership further reinforces its rural dominance. Going forward, sustained rural recovery, improved affordability, and monsoon performance will play a crucial role in shaping industry momentum.
