The XEV 9e and BE 6 use steering and braking systems supplied by HL Mando, a leading South Korean Tier 1 original equipment manufacturer (OEM). HL Mando provides parts to global brands such as Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Chevrolet, BMW, Volkswagen, and Kia. In India, HL Mando operates through a joint venture with the Anand Group.
For these Mahindra EVs, HL Mando supplies electronically-actuated brakes. These brakes include an electronic stability program (ESP) module and an integrated master cylinder. While there is no direct confirmation that the test vehicle in Korea is linked to HL Mando, it is possible the vehicle is there for component testing or fine-tuning.
Mahindra may also be exploring partnerships with other Korean suppliers. Hanon Systems, for example, specializes in powertrain cooling and thermal management solutions for EVs. LG Energy Solution is another key player, known as one of the largest battery manufacturers globally. Currently, the XEV 9e and BE 6 use battery packs sourced from BYD. However, future collaborations with Korean companies remain possible.
Possible Reasons for Testing in Korea
There are several reasons why the XEV 9e may be in South Korea. One possibility is benchmarking by Korean automakers such as Hyundai or Kia, who may analyze competitor vehicles for engineering insights. This practice helps companies understand battery packaging, power electronics, suspension tuning, and software architecture.
Another reason could be global homologation. Testing in South Korea may support regulatory certification, cold-weather calibration, high-speed testing, and software validation for export markets. Although South Korea is not currently a launch market for Mahindra, such testing can help prepare the XEV 9e for international sales.
