New Defender Sport Electric expected to debut next year
JLR will launch the Defender Sport as its first electric Defender, built on the new EMA platform. The model will measure just over 4.5 metres and feature four-wheel drive, while internal combustion engines remain available in the wider Defender range.

JLR will build the upcoming Defender Sport on its new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA). This platform will also support future models like the next Range Rover Evoque and Velar. Larger Range Rover and Defender models will use the MLA platform, while Jaguar's future electric vehicles will sit on a separate architecture called JEA.

Defender Sport Platform and Design
The new Defender Sport is expected to measure just over 4.5 metres in length. The EMA platform uses an underfloor battery layout. This design means the Defender Sport will not match the wheel articulation and travel of the current ladder-frame Defender models. JLR's Cameron acknowledged that the EMA platform introduces "vehicle constraints," especially regarding suspension travel. Despite these limitations, he stated the Defender Sport will remain class-leading in key Defender features.
The Defender Sport is likely to retain four-wheel drive, probably through a dual-motor electric setup. This model will become the Defender brand's first fully electric vehicle.
Powertrain Options and Market Strategy

Internal combustion engines will continue in the broader Defender line-up for the foreseeable future. Cameron explained that global demand for electrification varies. The United States, which is Defender's largest market, shows less interest in electric vehicles. In the United Kingdom, diesel engines still account for most Defender sales.
The current Defender already offers a plug-in hybrid version. However, its electric range is limited by the existing platform. Future Defender generations built on newer architectures are expected to offer more electrified options.
Cameron also indicated that the Defender brand could expand in the coming years. The line-up may grow both upwards and downwards in size, depending on market demand.
