Tata Motors experienced a significant downturn in its passenger vehicle (PV) sales in September 2024, marking its lowest point in 21 months. Both domestic and export sales reflected this downward trend, highlighting ongoing challenges in the market. Tata Motors has only two top selling models as per now Punch and Nexon, if we see sales of other models declining from the previous year.
But we can see substantial growth in the upcoming months with the launch of Tata Curvv ICE although they have launched the Tata Curvv EV but it’s too expensive compared to Petrol and Diesel variants.
Next year we can see better performance with the launch of upgraded facelifts of best performing models like Punch, Safari, Harrier, or the Nexon.
Domestic Sales Hit a Low
| Category | September 2023 | September 2024 | % Change |
| Domestic PV Sales | 44,809 units | 41,031 units | -8.36% |
| Export PV Sales | 508 units | 250 units | -50.79% |
| EV Sales (Domestic) | 6,050 units | 4,680 units | -22.64% |
| Total PV Sales (Q2 FY25) | 1,30,753 units | -6% |
In September 2024, Tata Motors' domestic sales of passenger vehicles dropped to 41,031 units, an 8.36% decrease compared to the same period last year when 44,809 units were sold. This marked the lowest sales figure since December 2022. On a month-on-month basis, sales declined by 6.98% from August 2024’s total of 44,142 units, showcasing persistent difficulties in the domestic market.
Decline in Export Sales
Tata Motors' export volumes also saw a sharp drop. The company exported only 250 passenger vehicles in September 2024, a steep 50.79% decline compared to the 508 units exported in September 2023. This adds to the overall grim sales outlook for the company during this period.
Tata Motors' EV Sales
Tata Motors' electric vehicle (EV) segment, once considered a strong performer, also faced challenges in September 2024. The company sold 4,680 EVs, reflecting a 22.64% decrease compared to the 6,050 units sold in the same month last year. Despite this downturn, Tata Motors remains committed to strengthening its position in the EV market.
For the third quarter of FY 2024 (Q3 FY24), domestic PV sales amounted to 1,29,930 units, a 5.81% drop compared to the same quarter in FY 2023. Meanwhile, export sales during this period fell by 16.78%, with 823 units exported in Q3 FY24 versus 989 units in Q3 FY23.
Q2 FY25 Total Sales Decline
For the second quarter of FY 2025 (Q2 FY25), Tata Motors reported a total PV sales figure of 1,30,753 units, reflecting a 6% decline year-over-year. This decline underscores the company's struggle with fluctuating demand and market uncertainty, particularly in the EV sector, where Q3 FY24 sales dropped 15.97% compared to the previous year.
