Tata Motors Leads as India’s Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge in FY26
India’s electric passenger vehicle market grew to 4.2% share in FY26, led by Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor, and Mahindra and Mahindra. New entrants held only 2% market share, while luxury segment trends varied.

India’s electric passenger vehicle (EV) market saw significant growth in FY26. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), EVs accounted for 4.2% of total passenger vehicle retail sales, reaching 1,99,923 units. This marks a rise from 2.6% in FY25. Established manufacturers, including Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor, and Mahindra and Mahindra, captured 87.3% of the market share last fiscal year. New entrants such as Maruti Suzuki, VinFast India, and Tesla together held only 2% of the market.

Major OEM Performance
Tata Motors led the market, selling 78,811 units in FY26. This represents a 35.9% increase from 57,994 units in FY25. The Nexon EV and Punch EV were key contributors to Tata’s growth. JSW MG Motor secured the second position, achieving a 73.67% year-on-year increase with 53,089 units sold. The Windsor and Comet models drove much of this demand.
Mahindra and Mahindra entered the EV market in late 2024 and saw rapid growth. The company sold 42,721 units in FY26, up from 8,426 units in FY25, marking a 407% increase. Hyundai Motor India also reported strong results, with sales rising 137.59% to 5,885 units, led by the Creta EV.
Other OEMs and New Entrants
BYD India posted a 54.01% increase in sales, reaching 5,361 units. Kia India experienced a sharp rise of 794.26%, selling 3,738 units in FY26 compared to 418 units in FY25. Among new entrants, VinFast India sold 2,390 units, Tesla registered 342 units, and Maruti Suzuki accounted for 1,416 units of its eVitara model.
FADA President C S Vigneshwar stated that this growth reflects India’s ability to lead a mass-market energy transition. He noted that the momentum behind India’s EV journey remains strong.
Luxury Segment Trends
In the luxury EV segment, BMW India recorded 123.86% growth, selling 3,537 units. Mercedes-Benz saw a 9.51% decline, with sales dropping to 1,047 units from 1,157 units in the previous fiscal. Key luxury EV models included the BMW iX1, BMW i7, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and the Mercedes-Benz electric G Wagon.
Stellantis experienced a 71.39% decrease in sales, falling to 576 units from 2,013 units. Volvo Auto India reported a 5.21% decline, selling 382 units in FY26.
