Volkswagen Auto expands Sri Lanka portfolio with Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus launch
Volkswagen has officially launched the Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan in Sri Lanka in partnership with Continental Cars, marking a strategic expansion in the South Asian market.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has officially introduced the Volkswagen brand in Sri Lanka. This move is part of SAVWIPL’s strategy to expand its export footprint from India. The company partnered with Continental Cars and Commercials Ltd to launch the brand in the Sri Lankan market.

SAVWIPL has launched two India-manufactured models, the Volkswagen Taigun SUV and the Virtus sedan, in Sri Lanka. Both vehicles are produced at the Chakan manufacturing facility near Pune. The export aligns with the group’s 'Make-in-India, for India and the World' approach.
New Facility and Local Partnership
The launch includes the opening of a new 3S facility in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Colombo. Developed with Continental Cars and Commercials Ltd., the showroom covers 18,713 square feet and is situated on nearly one acre of land. The facility features over 20 service bays for sales, service, and spare parts operations.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of SAVWIPL, stated that Sri Lanka is a market with strong demand for quality engineering and premium mobility products. He noted that SAVWIPL aims to use its localization, engineering, and manufacturing scale in India to support long-term regional growth.
Product Strategy and Market Outlook
Jan Bures, executive director for sales, Marketing and digital at SAVWIPL, explained that the Taigun and Virtus were chosen to meet demand in Sri Lanka’s premium passenger vehicle segment. He emphasized the company’s focus on building a robust retail and after-sales network to support business growth in the country.
SAVWIPL highlighted that the Sri Lanka launch comes as the local automotive market shows signs of stabilization and recovery. The company noted increasing customer interest in premium vehicles. This launch is part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s role as a manufacturing and export hub for the Volkswagen Group.
Manufacturing and Export Operations
SAVWIPL manages Indian operations for six Volkswagen Group brands: Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche. The company operates manufacturing facilities at Chakan, Pune, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. These facilities have a combined annual production capacity of 315,000 units.
SAVWIPL reported exporting over 700,000 vehicles to more than 40 countries. The company expects to cross the milestone of 2 million locally produced vehicles in 2025. India-produced models, including the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus and the Skoda Kylaq, Kushaq, and Slavia, have achieved cumulative sales of 550,000 units.
